10 years ago: March 24, 2001 - Strong pitching by both baseball teams kept the bases clear for much of the game as visiting Los Banos High edged Manteca High 1-0 on Friday. The Buffaloes cracked out six hits in the loss as Ryan Cardoza’s two doubles were wasted.
Coach Eric Reis’s Sierra High tennis team dropped its first match on Friday, losing to Tracy High 12-3. The Timberwolf doubles team of Steve Gallagher-Ryan Allen picked up a win.
Sierra High had a strong showing yesterday as the T’wolf swimmers dominated visiting Oakdale High, with scores of 109-50 in boys competition and 102-39 in girls action. For the boys, Clayton Basepayne and David Lowry were both four-time winners. Basepayne took firsts in the 200 IM (2:14.78), the 100 breast (1:05.97) and swam on the winning 200 free and 200 medley relay teams. Lowry swam wins in the 200 free (2:01.06) and the 100 free (51.59) and was on the two relay teams. The girls were led by Melissa Brock’s victories in the 500 free (5:50.3) and the 50 free (26.77), as well as on the winning 200 medley relay team. Other triple winners included Stacy Brock in the 200 free (2:06.99), the 200 IM (2:18.16) and the 400 free relay; Nicole Draa in the 100 fly (1:03.08), the 100 free (56.91) and on the 400 free relay; and Ja-Neil Bragg in the 100 back (1:04.06), the 100 breast (1:11.17) and in the 400 free relay.
Sierra High quickly finished off a delayed baseball game from Wednesday with Tracy High on Friday to put the final score of that game at 11-10 and then completed the sweep with an 8-3 victory over the Bulldogs in six innings due to darkness. Mike Loomis pitched the final inning of the first game and then threw all six innings of the following contest. He struck out five n the second game. Ryan Teicheira went two for two in the second game for the T’wolves. In the first game, Brandon Larson singled home Alex Avila with two outs in the ninth inning to win it.
East Union High took a 6-5 baseball win over Sonora High on Friday. Each team collected five hits in the game, but Sonora added five errors to make the difference. With the Lancers trailing 4-2 in the sixth inning, Scotty Costa came home on a walk and then Chris Adams stroked a bases-loaded double down the right field line to drive in three runs and seal the win for EU.
Both the boys and girls teams of East Union High swimmers won 10 of their 11 events to defeat Los Banos High on Friday. Coach Nancy Wright’s Lady Lancers beat Los Banos by a 116-54 score and the boys were winners by a 122-43 count. Quinlan Chaves was a four-time winner as he placed first in the 200 free (2:51.71), the 500 free (4:53.35) and on the winning 200 medley and 400 free relay teams. Victor Hucke also took four firsts: in the 200 IM (2:16.87), the 100 back (1:05.66) and on the two winning relay teams. The girls were led by double winners Tiffany Vaught (100 breast and the 100 fly), Erin Pritchard (100 back and 200 IM), Stacia Stricker (200 free and 100 free) and Jaime Heupel (50 free and 400 free).
East Union High downed Los Banos High in track action on Thursday by a score of 89-47 in the boys division, but the Lady Lancers dropped a 72-63 count to the Lady Tiger runners. For the EU boys, Kenny Hughes and Ricky Cuevas were double winners. Hughes grabbed the 200 in 22.09 and the long jump at 19 feet, eight inches. Cuevas took the mile in 4:53 and the 800 in 2:13. The EU girls swept the mile as Melinda Lipanovich took first in 6:07, followed by Diana Cuevas and Ashley Hammerstein.
Sonora High swimmers downed both the Manteca High boys and girls teams on Friday. Despite their 112-58 loss, the Lady Buffs did have some high points. The 200 medley relay team of Ashley Uphaus, Katy May, Jessica See and Sarah Houck placed first in the 200 medley relay. Andrew May led the Buffs in their loss with firsts in the 100 fly (57.7) and swimming on the winning 200 medley and 200 free relay teams. Evan Gainer also took a first in the 100 (52.6) and was on the two winning relay teams.
Manteca High’s young tennis team continues to struggle through a tough Valley Oak League schedule. The Buffaloes dropped a 14-1 decision to visiting Los Banos High on Friday . Mike Peters grabbed the only win for MHS.
East Union High suffered a 14-1 loss to host West High in tennis action on Friday in Tracy. Joe Joaquin earned the only win for the Lancer netters.
Manteca High scored first and then took a 2-0 softball victory from Sierra High on Thursday. The game was a pitching duel between Lady T’wolf Amanda Tucker and Lady Buff hurler Becci Harnden. Both girls struck out seven batters. Harnden helped get her win with an RBI single in the fifth inning for the first MHS run. Trisha Werre, Lisa Young and Vanessa Portillo got the only hits for SHS. Tucker pitched a two-hitter in the loss.

For Coach Lisa Hobby’s girls, Rebekah Hagan was a quadruple winner with first place finishes in the triple jump (30-6.75), the long jump (14-3), the 400 meters (1:06.19) and part of the victorious 4x400 relay team. Lorelyn Pascual was also a four-time winner as she finished first as part of the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams, as well as taking the 100 in 12.97 and the 200 in 26.9. The T’wolf boys were led by double winners Sean Payne-Wilson (400 in 52.78 and the 800 in 2:07.13) and Terrance Montgomery (4x100 relay and the 200 in 23.7).
A thinned herd of Manteca High Buffaloes fell to visiting Sonora High in a track meet on Thursday. The Buffs lost 84-52 and the Lady Buffs dropped a 92-44 verdict. Charlie Larson won the 110 meter and 300 meter hurdles for the MHS boys.
East Union High got good production from the lower half of their lineup to lift the Lady Lancers to a 5-0 softball victory over host Oakdale High on Thursday. Ryan Harris led the EU offense with two hits. From the mound, Brittney Tachara only gave up two hits in six innings and struck out six batters.
All three Manteca schools made excellent showings in Monday’s second VOL golf meet in Tracy. Sierra High placed second in the meet with top golfer Mike Williams shooting a 79. The East Union High team took fourth as Josiah McKaniel had an 80. The Manteca High golfers placed sixth in the meet as MIchael Manoz had a low score of 83.
