40 years ago: March 29, 1978 – Manteca High’s baseball team was knocked out of competition in the Gus Gallagher Tournament in Stockton with their 5-1 loss to Tracy High last Thursday in first round of consolation action. The Buffaloes’ lack of hitting continued, collecting only three hits with no more than one in any frame. Second baseman Rick Hogan delivered a run-scoring double in the third inning for Manteca’s lone run of the evening.
Thursday was a long day at the Orestimba Boosters Tournament in Newman for East Union High’s baseball team. They played their first game at 1:00 p.m., but didn’t get their second game under way until 8:30 and finished after 11:00. In the first game, the Lancers easily defeated Riverbank High 10-2, scoring eight runs on only two hits in the first inning. Playing in the cold and under the lights, EU saw an early lead diminish and their pitching give out, losing to Mariposa High 6-2. Jim Agostini and Paul Seabron scored the runs for the Lancers.
30 years ago: March 31, 1988 – Gary Shockey threw a complete game shutout and drove in the first run Wednesday as Manteca High took third place in the Dick Windemuth Tournament at Modesto Junior College with a 2-0 baseball win over Sonora High. Shockey was also involved in one of three double plays turned by the Buffaloes on the day. “He pitched real well,” said MHS Coach Jack Thomson, who was the recipient of his 100th win to start his eighth year at the helm of Manteca baseball. Oscar Castellanos drove in the second run.
After dropping a 4-3 contest to Turlock High Tuesday on a home run, East Union High’s baseball team became unraveled Wednesday against Atwater High, surrendering four runs in the sixth inning which paved the way for the Falcons’ 7-3 win in the championship of the Atwater Easter Tournament. Despite the loss, EU landed four players on the all-tournament team. Larry Richter, Tony Alexander, Dan Harper and Gabe Granados each represented EU.
The Manteca High softball team lost a heart-breaking 2-1 decision to the host Orestimba High squad Tuesday in the championship game of the Orestimba Tournament in Newman. Sophomore Lady Buff pitcher Tisha Herzfeld had held the Warriors hitless for six innings and then gave up a pair of hits in the seventh. Herzfeld ended the game with 13 strikeouts in the loss.
Amanda Dias and Brenda Cook were double winners for the Manteca High girls’ track team during Tuesday’s Rio Linda Invitational Track Meet in Sacramento. Dias took firsts in the 100 low hurdles (16.0) and the 300 lows (47.9), while Cook garnered firsts in the shot put (38-8.5) and the discus (95-0). The Buff boys’ 1600-meter relay team of Jerry Cook, Heath Hitzman, John Mayse and Garrett Hubbart were victorious in a time of 3:31. MHS’s Paul Cano set a meet record in the pole vault at 14-3. Other Buff double winners included Mayse (110 high hurdles in 15.8) and the 300 intermediate hurdles in 41.9.
