90 years ago: March 15, 1928 – Escalon High journeyed over to Manteca High last Friday and lost by a 3 to 1 score in a very ragged baseball game. Both teams displayed some nice fielding work, but were very poor hitters. The heavy hitter for the Buffaloes was Ed Forsell, getting a double and a triple.
60 years ago: March 20, 1958 – The Manteca High thin-clads got off to a somewhat surprising start this season when they defeated the favored Stagg High Delta King squad. The score was 56-48. The big surprise for the Manteca coaches was Jay Mitchell, who took firsts in the only events he entered. Mitchell is a senior and had only one day of practice before the meet. He ran a 10.6 in the 100-yard dash and sped to a 24.6 time in the 220.
50 years ago: March 17, 1968 – Ron Agostini shot a 40 to lead the East Union High golf team to a 216-221 victory over Edison High at the Van Buskirk golf course.
40 years ago: March 15, 1978 – Coach Ed Williams’ East Union High golfers shot a 200 to beat Sonora High by 34 strokes last Friday. The score was 200-234 on the Manteca Park course. Robert Hicks and Tom Baker paced the Lancers with their scores of 39.
Manteca High’s tennis team scored an easy 13.5-1.5 win over East Union High in both teams’ second VOL match on Tuesday. The Buffaloes’ Jeff Brock defeated EU’s Preston Tanaka, Joey Tanghal and Steve Masuda. Manteca High’s Mark Pinto also defeated the three Lancers. Randy Adair continued the Buffs’ domination of the singles events with three wins. In doubles play, Paul Moore and Ricardo Suarez defeated EU teams of Jim Langston/Larry Reeves and Dan Nunes/Dana Ota. Langston and Reeves scored the Lancers’ only win of the day, defeating the Buffs’ team of Grant Brashears and Jack Norris.
Manteca High’s softball team defeated Davis High of Modesto 12-7 last Tuesday in a game that wasn’t as close as the score. The Buffaloes were leading 10-1 in the fourth inning. Jill Rasmussen and Donna Simpson were the leading hitters for Manteca with three hits each.
Manteca High finally got its first track meet in by defeating Hughson High 72.5-63.5 last Tuesday. The Buffalo women won 88-21. Sergio Aguilar paced the Buff men with wins in the mile and two-mile. The Buff women were paced by Lori Watson with firsts in the low hurdles and the discus, by Denise Negley who won the 880 and the mile and by Andrea Negley winning in the 440 and the 220.
30 years ago: March 20, 1988 – East Union High performed in another baseball thriller Saturday afternoon, climaxed by Robert Randall’s two-out, game-winning hit to right field that earned EUHS a slim 2-1 triumph over Tokay High at Modesto’s John Thurman Field. Randall’s hit drove in Paul Duivenvoorden from second base. The win over the Tigers gave the Red and Blue their second straight championship in the Dave Abel tournament.
The Manteca High weightlifting team ventured to Mariposa High on Saturday and finished fifth out of 12 teams in the Mariposa Power-lifting Tournament. Mal Cabrera earned an individual division title.
Heath Hitzman zoomed to a pair of victories and also sparked both Manteca High relay teams as the Buffalo boys raised their overall mark to 4-0 with a convincing 97-42 Valley Oak League triumph over host Sonora High. The MHS girls also improved to 4-0, downing Sonora 87-39 behind double wins by Amanda Dias and Lynn Spradlin. Hitzman registered wins in the 100 (11.77) and 200 (24.60) in addition to his work on the relay team victories. Other double winners included Paul Cano (110 high hurdles in 16.04) and pole vault (13 feet). In the girls’ competition, Dias cruised to victories in the 100 hurdles (16.71) and the 300 LH in 47.84. Spradlin scored wins in the 100 (13.75) and the 200 (28.48), as well as joining Dias on the two winning relay teams.
All-VOL selections topped the winter sports social at Manteca High Monday night. Chosen MVP’s for their respective sports were all-league picks Mary Foehringer for girls basketball, Dave Ennis and Marshall Cannon for boys basketball, Mike Carroll for wrestling and Oscar Castellanos for soccer.
