Seventy years ago, on January 28, 1941, for the first time to date in this year’s basketball season, the Manteca High cagers won a game played on the local high school floor. In a return practice tilt with Ripon High, the Buffaloes avenged the defeat they suffered at the hands of the Indians by giving the over-confident Ripon outfit a 46 to 27 smearing in just one more “wild” game which featured the beautiful field shooting of Glen Bale and Jim Poulos and sure sucker shots of small but tricky and fast Ken Drury. Starring for the Buffaloes were Bale, high point man with 16 points, and Drury, his sucker shots amounting to 10 points.

Mr. Baker, principal of the Atlanta School, umpired. Mrs. Pearce has been coaching the local boys and was duly gratified by the manner in which they put the game over. Ruben Larson as pitcher proved too swift for the other team. Ross Salmon made four runs, Howard Salmon and Howard Laffaty, each two.

The score was 40 to 28. Whether due to lack of confidence in each other or not, the Buffaloes just couldn’t get to “clicking”. They took the lead at the start of the game but couldn’t keep going.
60 years ago: February 1, 1951 - In bowing to the strong Rio Vista High team Tuesday night by a score of 56 to 32, Manteca High’s losing streak was increased to five. Manteca was beaten by height, not ability, as the once-defeated Rio Vistans averaged around six feet, two inches. They held Manteca completely scoreless in the first quarter. Leo Cardinal put in 12 points to lead the low-scoring Buffaloes.
50 years ago: February 2, 1961 - A crowd of 150 baseball fans attended last Saturday night’s first annual Manteca Hot Stove Baseball dinner at the White Hall. The event was the first held here in several years and proceeds are to go to the Manteca Merchants, the local semi-pro baseball team. Featured speaker Billy Martin made a big hit with local fans, as he reeled off story after story of his experiences while a member of the New York Yankees.
Manteca High pulled off one of the upsets of the season last Friday night by taking a 40-39 decision from a highly regarded Sonora High quintet in Sonora. The win was the first Valley Oak League win of the season for the Buffaloes and pulled them up into a tie for fifth place with Atwater High.
40 years ago: January 27, 1971 - Overpowering dominance on the offensive board, coupled with a magnificent effort by Manteca High’s Al Betschart were the key factors in the Buffaloes’ 78-61 victory over a surprisingly persistent East Union High five Friday night before a sell-out, turnaway crowd at the Manteca High gym. The 6-foot-5 Betschart, with a whopping 43 points, is currently tied for top spot in the Valley Oak League scoring race. Denny Letcher was the only other Buff scoring in double figures with 12 points. Ken Richichi was the Lancers’ leading scorer with 22 points, even though fouling out with five minutes to play in the game. Sophomore Mike Crosby added 18 points to the EU total.

Thirteen of EU’s 14 dressed players dotted the scoring column, led by Billy Emperador and Kelly Stewart. The two seniors, playing about half the game, popped in 14 points apiece.
Manteca High School, using a balanced offensive attack and a stingy defense, ended its first half action in the VOL Tuesday night as the Buffaloes defeated Oakdale High 74-57 in a relatively easy contest in Oakdale. Reno Cook and Mike Delmanowski finished as high scorers for Manteca with 16 points each. Corky Burke completed the double figure scoring by adding 10.
East Union High, behind the brilliant play of Kay Hall, outscored Manteca High 8-2 in overtime Thursday night to upset the Lady Buffs 48-42 in VOL action. It was the first league loss for Manteca High. Hall finished as the leading scorer for EU with 15, while Amy Powell hit for 10. MHS finished with almost identical scoring as Gigi Cook hit for 15 and Donna Foster had 10.
The Manteca High soccer team won the battle but lost the war. Coach Bill Davis’s booters dominated Central Catholic High Tuesday but bowed 3-2 to the Raiders in the rain. Manteca out-shot Central 20-7 but couldn’t put the ball in the net. Randy Neto and Pat Schimke scored goals for the Buffalo booters.
Central Catholic High scored a 3-1 win over the winless East Union High soccer team in CCC action Tuesday. Juan Guevara converted a penalty kick to avoid a shutout.
