It’s not a Manteca versus Sonora tennis match unless a few feathers are ruffled.
The Buffaloes had their 38-match Valley Oak League win streak snapped Tuesday in an 8.5-6.5 loss to the Wildcats that felt doubly bitter considering the opponent.
It’s no secret that there’s no love lost between the Manteca and Sonora tennis programs. Both sides, which have split the VOL crown in each of the past five seasons, have a heated history of raised voices and pointed fingers on more than one match day.
Enter Chilean exchange student Vicente Mosso.
Playing with the vocal voracity of Terrell Owens at his finest, Mosso swept through his Buffalo opponents Tuesday and made sure to let them, and everyone else on hand, know about it.
“(Mosso) is a good player,” Manteca head coach Frank Fontana said. “I just wish he could have won with a little more respect.
“Win the match and move on.”
Mosso downed Yassen Aniss 6-3, but Manteca’s No. 1 recovered for a huge 7-6 come-from-behind win over Eric Segerstrom before downing Luke Bergan, 6-3.
Kyle Morton and Mark Leon couldn’t record a win against Sonora’s veteran singles rotation.
Ultimately, the contest came down to the No. 1 doubles match where Sonora’s Daniel Howard and Chris Sanchez claimed a thrilling 10-8 win over Arnie Morales and Alex Barragan.
Morales and Barragan faced 7-2 and 8-4 deficits before coming up a deuce short of forcing a 9-all deadlock.
“Arnie and Alex took a while to wake up,” Fontana said. “You can’t spot a quality team a 7-2 lead. Hopefully we can learn from this. It was just a matter of expectations, pressure and nerves.”
Morales and Barragan handled Ben Smith and Dylan Burns, 10-0, while Manteca’s No. 2 doubles combo of Alex McAdams and Max Angelo won 10-5 and 11-10 over Howard and Sanchez.
“It was a competitive match,” Fontana said. “Sonora was just a little bit better. Whoever wins league is going to have a loss.
“We don’t go down easy in Manteca, that’s why people don’t like us.”
The Buffaloes (6-1 VOL) must rebound quickly as a visit to Oakdale looms Thursday.
Sierra 8.5, East Union 6.5
Forrest Tolman played at No. 1 and the youngster produced for the Timberwolves, going 2-1 with a 6-1 win over Sean Hilscher and a 6-2 win over Steve Shepherd at East Union High.
East Union’s Tyler Ward downed Tolman 7-5.
Kevin Rausa swept with 6-2, 6-1, 6-0 wins, and Doug Marks took two of three, winning 6-3 over Ward and 6-4 over Shepherd, but dropping 7-5 to Hilscher.
In doubles play, Adrian Prieto and Josh Weiland fell 4-10 to Marcos Aleman and Ariel Rosette and 11-10 (7-5) to Matt Eichsteadt and Chris Garcia. John Alan Hewitt and Jeff Largoza won 10-2, and fell 11-9.
Oakdale 14, Weston Ranch 1
In Weston Ranch, Satinder Singh provided the home team with its lone point, a 6-2 win.
Singh fell 1-6, 2-6 in his other matches, while Chris Legaspi lost 2-6, 1-6, 1-6, and Russell Espiritu fell 0-6 all three times.
In doubles play, Steven Ho and Rocky Langas lost 1-10, 1-10, while newcomers Jashune Stokes and Gagan Singh fell 0-10, 5-10.
“Once again, Satinder is the one that gets points for us, day in and day out,” Cougars head coach Jason Furtado said. “He battles every time.”
Despite the lopsided loss, Furtado said he had an opportunity to see a couple new players and mix things up with the lineup.
