Bryce Wilson, a sophomore at Sierra High, won the Level 10 national championship in the Double Mini trampoline event during the USA Gymnastics Junior Olympic Trampoline and Tumbling National Championships in late June at the San Jose Convention Center.

Wilson, who competes out of Springtime Tumbling and Trampoline in Livermore, turned in a collective score of 131.5 in the Double Mini for first overall, and took runner-up in the Synchronized Trampoline event with teammate Kevin Cornell out of Reno.

Wilson now moves on to the USAG Final Selection Meet in Las Vegas, Sept. 25 and 26, with a chance to be selected for the national team and compete at the 2009 World Championships to be held in Russia in November.

“I actually didn’t expect that I was going to take first (in the Double Mini),” Wilson said. “(After the event), I didn’t think I did that well. It wasn’t until I saw the scores that I was like, ‘Oh.’ I was excited; this was the first time I had taken first. It was a great experience.”

Wilson, who has been competing against Cornell for five seasons, hadn’t teamed up with the Reno rival in the synchronized trampoline event until last season. This season, with both competing at Level 10, the highest on the sub-elite Junior Olympic circuit, the pair combined for a final score of 79.30.

“Before we compete, we usually get some time to work on it,” Wilson said. “We’ve been competing against each other for a while, so it works out.”

The Tumbling and Trampoline portion of USA Gymnastics consists of four events total. Wilson also took home sixth in the tumbling event and finished 20th on the trampoline.

Springtime teammate Josh Browne took second in the Double Mini to qualify for the World Trials, while Hannah Schnorr took third in Tumbling and Hailey Schnorr took fifth in the Double Mini.

Wilson, who boasts two other national crowns in tumbling at lower levels, qualified for World Trials in three out of four events (Double, Synchronized, Tumbling), a feat almost unheard of for one Level 10 competitor.

Wilson travels to Livermore three times a week to perfect his tumbling and trampoline skills, which require intense attention to detail and body control.

Competitors perform different aerial skills on each event pass, including double back flips, front flips, tucks and twists, off a three-foot wide double mini trampoline, 10 to 15 feet in the air. Each move is scrutinized by three USAG judges and one superior judge.

“Each skill has a degree of difficulty,” Bryce’s mother, Janet Wilson, explained. “In Level 10, the only event that has finals at the national championships, not only do you want perform each skill well, but you also want to have the highest degree of difficulty possible because that’s added on to your score.”

Brock and Jill Wilson (no relation) are the owners and operators of Springtime, which is located at 5715 Southfront Road, Unit D, in Livermore.

The Springtime tumblers have a long history of success at the national level, and Wilson is hoping to become the first Springtime tumbler to compete at the World Championships.

“My coaches are great, they help me out a lot,” Wilson said.

Said Janet: “There are about 15 (tumblers) on the team this year; nine went to nationals.”

There are lower and higher level classes offered, and they are split up throughout the day so that each class can focus on a specific event.

In order to qualify for the national team which will compete at the World Championships, Wilson must finish in the Top 4 in either the Double, Synchronized or Tumbling at World Trials.

“I definitely feel confident (heading into World Trials),” Wilson said. “I still have a couple of things I need to work on, like working on more difficult skills, but I feel good about my chances.”
