Spreckels Park Tigers outlast Northgate Rockies 13-11 in Juniors TOC contest

STOCKTON – Tied going into the seventh inning Thursday night, the Spreckels Park Tigers put up four runs in the top of the frame and the Northgate Rockies could only answer with two in the bottom to give the Tigers a 13-11 win in the consolation semifinals of the District 67 Juniors Tournament of Champions at Paul Weston Park.

Max Guarscio (2 for 3, run) and John Marek walked to start off the Spreckels Park seventh. Manolo Asuncion (three runs) reached on an error to load the bases for Giovanni Alvarez (two RBI) to draw a walk and plate Guarscio. Carter Castro (4 for 5, four RBI) then belted a two-RBI single that scored Marek and Asuncion. Alvarez capped the rally when he came in on a Blake Medeiros single to make the score 14-10.

Northgate loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh behind a single by Liam Ellis (2 for 2, RBI, two runs) and a pair of walks to Gabriel Strickland and Alberto Guzman. Landon Sanders (2 for 4, three RBI) singled in Strickland and Ellis with two outs bringing the walk-off run to the plate.

Tigers pitcher Asuncion then fielded a high comebacker and got the ball to first to end the game and the Rockies season.

Asuncion took the mound with one out, one on and two across in the fifth inning and the Spreckels Park leading 9-8. Sanders got down a sacrifice bunt to score Ellis and tie the game at 9-9. Asuncion induced a fly out to end the inning, retired Northgate in order in the sixth behind a pair of strikeouts before holding off the Rockies in the seventh.

Felix Rodriguez was 2 for 4 with three RBI for Northgate.

The Tigers face Ripon tonight at 6 in the consolation finals.
