Northgate exploded for seven second-inning runs and added four more in the fourth, which were needed to withstand a late surge as the 11-under All-Star team held on for a 12-8 win over Manteca in opening-round action of the District 67 Tournament at Manteca Little League on Wednesday night.
Matthew Mendoza (2 for 4, two RBI, two runs) and Jackson Frith (2 for 2, RBI, run) both had two hits in the seven-run second for Manteca with each scoring a run. Mendoza knocked in two runs in the frame and Frith one.
In the four-run Manteca fourth Tony Sanchez (2 for 4, four RBI, run) ripped a three-run single and Travis Rose (two runs) drew a bases-loaded walk.
Trailing 12-3 after four innings, Manteca got five runs in the fifth behind Bode Hiatt’s three-RBI triple. Julian Garcia (2 for 3, two RBI, run) and Alex Espinoza (2 for 3, RBI) each added an RBI single in the frame.
Issac Carrasco reached base four times for Manteca, going 2 for 4 with an RBI and two runs.
Mountain House defeated Patterson in the other opening-round contest, and as a result Northgate and Mountain House play in the semifinal of the four-team tournament today while Manteca and Patterson face off in an elimination contest. Both games are at 5:30 p.m.
