Jordan Wolfe’s single in the second inning for the Giants was sandwiched between five walks and an Expos error that led to five Giants runs on the way to a 13-4 five-inning mercy-rule win for the Spreckels Park minors championship at Brock Elliott School on Saturday.
Brandon Cortijo, Skyler Patrick, Landen Vargas (RBI, two runs) and Fernando Martinez (2 for 3, RBI, two runs) all walked and scored for the Giants in the second. Wolfe (2 for 3, two runs) scored and Liam Nabb (two RBI, double, two runs) drew one of three bases-loaded walks in the frame that saw the Giants bump their lead to 7-1.
With Fernando Martinez (2 for 3, two RBI, two runs) on third and Blake Swanson (RBI, double, two runs) on second in the top of the first, Miguel Arroyo (run) hit a routine grounder that was misplayed, allowing Martinez and Swanson to score for a 2-0 lead the Giants would not relinquish. The Expos responded in the bottom of the frame after Aiden Loveall doubled in Daniel Teicheira to bring the Expos within 2-1.
In a three-run Giants fourth, Nabb’s RBI double that plated Swanson was followed by a Julian Rodriguez single that scored Nabb. Rodriguez (RBI, run) came around to score on a passed ball for an 11-4 lead.
The Giants got the two runs that invoked the mercy rule in the fifth. Martinez singled in Wolfe and Landen Vargas (RBI, two runs) scored on a Swanson groundout for a 13-4 lead. The Expos did not answer back in the bottom of the frame, and with a lead of eight runs or more the game was called.
The Expos scored two runs in the third when Piper Asuncion and Reid Vang walked and worked their way around to score on a pair of wild pitches. Brett Schlecht singled in Ace Midulla for the other Expos run in the fourth.
The District 67 Tournament of Champions begins on Saturday at Spreckels Park and the tournament host Giants will face either Tracy or Ripon on Sunday morning at 11.
