MARIPOSA — Two second-half interceptions Saturday played a pivotal role for the varsity Ripon Chiefs in their 20-14 come-from-behind victory over the Modesto Rams in the Trans-Valley Youth Football League Super Bowl at the Mariposa County Fairgrounds.
Late in the third quarter with the score tied at 14, Modesto was driving for the go-ahead score when Mateo Hernandez grabbed an interception near midfield and returned it to the Rams 4-yard line.
Two plays later, Dwight Jackson followed the block of Andy Ceja into the end zone for what would prove to be the winning score.
Luciano Gonzalez intercepted a Rams pass on the ensuing drive to shut the door on Modesto’s hopes.
Jackson (10 of 14 passing, 129 yards; 10 carries, 42 yards) added another touchdown on a 6-yard run and hit Nick Price (four receptions, 50 yards) with a 23-yard touchdown pass.
Price made an interception and five tackles.
Tanner Goudeau led the Ripon defense with six tackles with Jackson and Lionel Valencia each making four.
Petlansky scored three rushing touchdowns and racked up 185 yards on the ground – in addition to a touchdown on a 55-yard kickoff return – all in the first half for the Ripon Knights.
