RC upended on the pitch

SALIDA — Ripon Christian keeper Beth Van Vliet had a busy day Wednesday in a 5-1 loss to Modesto Christian.

Van Vliet finished with 18 saves, but the performance would go for naught.

Ashley Roberts scored RC’s lone goal in the second half on a breakaway one-on-one, but the Crusaders answered with three straight goals to close it out.

Kailee Adams suffered a sprained ankle early on and was sidelined.

“The first half was pretty even,” RC head coach Travis Haveman said. “One of (MC’s first-half) goals was an unfortunate handball at the edge of the box for a penalty kick.”

With the loss, RC slipped to 0-7-2 in Trans Valley League play, and 4-9-2 overall.

The Knights travel to Mistlin Park to take on Ripon in a make-up contest this afternoon.

Frustrated by its sloppy all-around effort just two days prior, East Union was near-perfect Wednesday when rival Sierra visited for Game 2 of their best-of-three Valley Oak League series. Blake Mount struck out 12 in a dominant two-hit shutout, and he was backed by a clean defensive effort and timely hitting in a 9-0 win for EU at Maurice Agostini Field. It was a complete role reversal from the opener, which Sierra took 11-1 in six innings. The rubber game is Friday at Sierra’s Jack Stadium.
