WRESTLING: Lathrop girls’ grapplers claim WAC opener win

CERES — Lathrop High’s wrestling program split the varsity matches in its Western Athletic Conference opener at Ceres on Tuesday.
The Spartans girls squad prevailed 36-24 on the strength of five pinfall victories, while the boys fell short, 48-24.
Tammy Pham (116), Janida Garcia (131), Alexis Murray (137), Sarah Atkins (143) and Kristina Rose (150) anchored Lathrop’s win. Jasmine Montes won via forfeiture.
For the boys, Edward Cuellar (126), Callum Gabbett (152) and Moses Payne (195) won by fall. Fernando Rios squeaked out an 11-8 decision in the 170-pound match. Jose Soto won via forfeit at 132.
Ceres cruised to a 36-6 win in junior varsity action. Andrew Garcia accounted for Lathrop’s lone points, getting a win at 182 pounds.
