BAKERSFIELD — Sierra High junior Alexa Garcia is on the fast track to the medal rounds after winning her first two matches Thursday in the CIF State Girls Wrestling Championships at Rabobank Arena.

Teammate Camille Jarmon went 1-1, while East Union’s Sarah Atkins and Ripon’s Katelyn Cardoza dropped their first-round matches.

Day 2 begins with the first-round consolation matches this morning from 9 to noon. Garcia won’t compete again until the late afternoon, 3-6 p.m., in the winners-bracket quarterfinal. The top eight placers earn medals Saturday.

Garcia, the Sac-Joaquin Section’s 160-pound runner-up and No. 8 seed for state, pinned Belen Merino of San Pasqual (San Diego Section) with a second left in the match. She followed that up with a 5-minute, 33-second stoppage against Vivian Fraustino (Shadow Hills, Southern Section). Ehireme Ohens awaits Garcia in the quarterfinals. The sophomore out of Stockdale in the Central Section got a free pass in the opening round when top-seeded Out Osteen (Chaminade, SS) forfeited. Ohens earned her spot in the quarters with a 2-1 decision over Los Banos freshman Linda Pelayo.

At 111 pounds, Jarmon also started strong, finishing Sandy Luevano (San Ysidro, SDS) in 3:33. She defaulted in the second round against seventh-seeded Alyihah Rollins (Birmingham, Los Angeles Section).

Atkins had a tough draw in her opener, getting matched with 137-pound top seed Drury Aine of Westminster (SS). Atkins lost via fall in 1:51 and looks to stave off elimination this morning against Valeria Cortez (James Luck, Central Coast Section).

Cardoza (131) was pinned by Northview’s (SS) Tierra Jimerson in 1:05. It doesn’t get any easier for the Ripon freshman, who gets No. 5 seed Phonisha Pruitt in consolation action. Pruitt of Lincoln High is a two-time SDS champion but was upset in a third-round pin.
