Ripon’s banner season came to an end Tuesday in the first round of the California Interscholastic Federation Division III Northern Regionals.

Seeded 12th, the Indians could not overcome unforced errors and No. 5 Aragon in a 16-25, 20-25, 23-25 defeat in San Mateo.

Ripon (30-3) did not have a lead until the start of the third set when it opened on a three-point run. The match appeared to be headed to a fourth set with the Indians ahead 22-18 following an ace from Emeri Lane, but the battle-hardened Dons (20-17) rallied for four consecutive points that included back-to-back combined blocks from Cassandra McMillan and Gabriella Xiao against Ripon standout Adriana Dorn.

Xiao gave her team set point with a tip, and Natalie Huang ended it with a kill.

Aragon travels to No. 4 Salinas (25-10) in a quarterfinal pitting Central Coast Section finalists. Salinas won the CCS Division I title, while Aragon is the Division II runner-up.

Ripon captured its seventh Sac-Joaquin Section on Saturday, doing so in Division IV.

It was clear from the start of the NorCal opener that the Indians were going to have their hands full with a disciplined upper-division squad that boasts more firepower. Aragon staked a 16-5 lead in game 1, getting a six-point service run from Emilia Kunkel. She’s one of two key freshmen for the Dons.

Ripon was able to stay within reach in the second set, but Aragon always had an answer to keep the visiting club from gaining momentum.

Remarkably, there were only three service errors in the match — none from the Dons.

Aragon senior outside hitter Sophie Rubinstein tied Dorn for match-high honors with 16 kills. Dorn also had three service aces.

Freshman Poppy McKenzie added 11 kills, eight service points and three aces for the Dons, and Kunkel served 10 points and two aces.

Sophomore right-side hitter Jorie Eskes contributed eight kills for Ripon, and senior Shayla McKeon chipped in six kills and two blocks. Lane finished with seven service points and two aces.
