Venture Academy fireballer Angel Voller was too much for host River Islands on Friday, keeping the Riptide off the bases until the fourth inning in an 11-1 five-inning mercy-rule-shortened Central California Athletic Alliance baseball contest at Champions Field Community Park
“Probably the last time I saw someone throw that fast was in college,” River Islands coach Cody Kruip said. “I think this the first time our guys have seen a guy that throws very well like he did — threw hard, located, the works.
“The guy (Voller) did exactly what he was supposed to do. He is a heck of a pitcher, he’s a competitor. He pounded the zone. A tip of the cap to him. He just had it today, he looked really good.”
Voller struck out six while allowing just two hits and walking two. Only one ball made into the Mustangs outfield.
“He (Voller) had good command,” River Islands coach Joe Piombo said. “He mixed it in well. He’s kind of an anomaly — you never know what’s going on in his mind, as long as he locks in.
“The outfielders may have fallen asleep a little bit, plus the wind was blowing so hard it was hard to make a play. He was throwing strikes all day. He was in rhythm.”
After going down in order in the first three innings, River Islands (0-2 CCAA, 6-4 overall) broke up Voller’s no-no with a leadoff single off the third-base bag by Matthew Echivarre who took second on a throwing error. Echivarre scored on a towering double to left by George Dayeh which on most days could have been a routine fly ball, but the swirling winds made it a tough out.
Riptide first baseman Santiago Lopez stopped a six-run Venture Academy fifth in its tracks. With the bases loaded and one out, Lopez snagged a line drive and doubled up the runner at first to end the frame.
The Mustangs improve to 2-0, 10-1. River Islands hosts Turlock Christian on Monday afternoon at 4:15.
