Needing a win to stay alive in the postseason hunt, East Union shut out visiting Kimball 4-0 Wednesday at Agostini Field behind senior A.J. Vasquez’s three-hitter.
Ashton Heath clubbed a solo homer to also highlight one of the Lancers’ most complete efforts of the season.
“The biggest thing for us today is that we committed no errors,” East Union coach Dan Bauer said. “We played great baseball and put ourselves in good shape.”
The Valley Oak League season ends Friday with East Union (6-8, 12-10 overall) looking to complete the three-game series sweep at Kimball (0-14, 2-21). A win combined with a Manteca loss at Central Catholic advances the Lancers to the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs.
Vasquez shined in what could be his final start at Agostini Field, walking just two batters while striking out four. Ace Avelar sparked the attack, going 2 for 3 with a double, a run and three steals. Blake Mount and Carson Sanders each contributed an RBI hit.
Oakdale 3, Sierra 1
Sierra (8-6, 11-12 overall) fell out of contention for second place with another tough loss to the Mustangs (10-4, 13-10-1), who still have a shot at a piece of the VOL championship.
It was a scoreless tie until the bottom of the fifth when Oakdale struck for all of its runs. Sierra answered in the sixth when Andruw Navarro knocked in Troy Morrow.
Sophomore Jordan Haver was the winning pitcher after firing 12 strikeouts and a three-hitter. Josh Seals was the hard-luck loser for the Timberwolves, giving up five hits and two walks over five innings. Two of the three runs were unearned.
