A strong showing on the 2009 season lifted Sierra High into the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III Volleyball Championships and some of the squads’ top individual performers were recognized.

Sierra High’s Jaslynn Liotard and Manteca High’s Davina Bennett were honored with spots on the all-VOL first team alongside four Sonora Wildcats and three Oakdale Mustangs. Bennett played her way on the squad from the setter position, while Liotard earned her berth as a middle-blocker.

“Jaslynn ended up as the all-time leader for kills in a season with 227,” Sierra head coach Tevani Liotard said. “She beat out Kristin Monroy from 1996 which really amazed me because Kristin Monroy was a huge factor in my program.

“If you would have asked me 10 years ago if any of my hitters would break it I would have said no.”

Jaslynn joined forces with teammate Alysia Atkins to guide the Timberwolves into the postseason, closing out the season winning eight of 10 matches, before dropping their first round playoff contest against Del Oro.

Bennet’s teammate Abigail Rosas landed a spot on the second-team all-VOL squad, joining East Union’s Brittany LaMar and Sierra High’s Atkins and Modesty Rodriguez. Rodriguez was a key ingredient for Sierra High, making her spot on the second-team all-VOL squad a tough pill for coach Liotard to swallow.

“I was a little upset that Modesty didn’t make it,” Liotard said of her senior setter. “My team went farther than a lot of teams and it had a  lot to do with the play of Modesty Rodriguez.”

The Lathrop Spartans were able to nab two nods on the honorable mention squad as Janell Butler and Ceceilia Lopez were honored in their sophomore and junior seasons, respectively. Weston Ranch junior Andrea Vega also made honorable mention, as did East Union teammates Amber Abidi and Courtney Palmer.

Chellsee Lee of Manteca High, Sidney Carter of Weston Ranch and Chelsea Bereta and Sierra Tailes of Sierra High also were recognized as honorable mention. Sonora finished the season with a perfect 15-0 record for the league championship, Oakdale and Sierra closed out the season as the league’s No. 2 and No. 3.
