RIPON — The atmosphere was a little more relaxed than usual for a live match at Jack Tone Golf Course Tuesday, but it might be what the golfers from Ripon High and rival Ripon Christian need going into today’s Valley Football League Midseason Tournament.
Ripon improved to 5-1 with a 186-204 win, keeping pace with North Division-leading Escalon. Ripon Christian fell to 0-6.
“They’re playing solid golf,” Ripon coach Eric Dambrosio said. “They’re still making some of the same mistakes, but the cool thing is that after we talk about them they learn from it, and it’s what’s ultimately going to make them better players.
Senior Sam Conway and sophomore Haylee Fannin shared medalist honors with a 9-over-par 40 while battling through gusty conditions. Ripon Christian’s Jenny Wickham carded the third best score with a 44.
Also scoring for the second-place Indians were Stefani Hofman and freshman Sienna Starck with a 49 and 57, respectively.
Raeanne DeRousse (51), Joie Darretta (55) and Jill Koetsier (54) rounded out the score for RC.
The league’s first of two tournaments begins with an 11 ‘clock shotgun start this morning at Greenhorn Creek Golf Course in Angels Camp.
Frances Telles contributed a 47, Angelique Cardoza and Alyssa Telles a 55 apiece and Salina Tiscareno a 59 for East Union.
For Sierra (0-6), Allison Smith’s 51 was good for a third-place finish. Elia Vazquez turned in a 58, Melanie Kiesel a 71, Holly Cook a 73 and Kiana Nelson a 76.
Sierra hosts Kimball Thursday back at Manteca Park Golf Course, while EU heads to Sonora.
Sonora’s Rachel Rosasco led all players with a 59.

In Sonora, the Buffaloes struggled with the gusts along with the challenges presented by host course. Micaela Dias posted a 57 to lead Manteca, which also got contributions from Emily Owsley (65), Brooke Mejorado (67), Airenne Curry (69) and Maria Saavedra (73).Sonora’s Rachel Rosasco led all players with a 59.
Lathrop 350, Kimball 353
Chelsea Brown paced Lathrop with a 53 at Tracy Country Club, edging Kimball’s Lydia Nelson by a stroke for low-round honors.
