Sierra placed 10th in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III boys wrestling championships Saturday with Samuel Perez finishing fourth at 140 pounds at Manteca High.
“Overall, I am extremely proud of Sierra wrestling today,” Sierra coach John Velasquez said “The kids performed well today and we’ll be working on pulling ahead on the close matches before Masters.
“Placing 10th as a team will help reinforce that it is time for kids to cash in on the hard work they have put into the season.”
The Top 8 finishers advance to the two-day SJS championships beginning on Friday morning at 9 at the Stockton Arena. Joining Perez will be teammates Shaan Jagpal (sixth, 146), Raymond Martin (sixth, 167), Daniel Morimoto (seventh, 108), Zakery Willson (seventh, 122) and Randy Euley (eighth, 152)
East Union’s Nico Salcido (134) and Isaac Alvarez (217) finished fifth.
“It was nice to end the day with a couple of wins,” Lancers coach A.J. Reindel said. “Nico (Salcido) was 3-2 on the day losing to (Jesse) Meza from Oakdale who placed second and (Azariah) Barajas of Golden Valley who placed third and he beat the 4th place Atwater wrestler. Isaac (Alvarez) was 4-2 losing to the third and fourth place guys.
“Both will work hard and be ready to wrestle their best on Friday.”
Manteca’s Ryder Vasquez (287) was sixth.
Division IV
Lathrop’s Daniel Narvaez (106) and Casyn Hopping (215) each placed fourth at Rancho Cordova High School and will advance to the Masters.
Division V
Ripon’s Joaquin Rodriguez (285) placed fourth at Rosemont High in Sacramento and will advance to Masters.
Girls Southern Regionals
Ripon placed third in Division V and Sierra was fifth in Division III on Saturday at Central Valley High in Ceres.
The Top 8 finishers advance to Masters.
Ripon’s Shaylin Potter (145) finished fifth and Trinity Diaz (105) was sixth.
Sierra is sending three wrestlers to Masters – Natalie Meija (fourth, 170), Valeria Galvan (fourth, 190) and Ashley Debelen (fifth, 115).
Manteca’s Mackenzie Sandoval (190) placed second and Liliana Rios (235) was third.
Lathrop’s Laila Hill (235) finished fourth and Kiana Quintero (120) was eighth.
