With only one dual-meet remaining in the Valley Oak League season, the Sierra Timberwolves have handled business in every facet of the program, setting up a winner-take-all finale with the Oakdale Mustangs after a thorough demolishing of an undermanned Lathrop High squad.
Sierra’s boys (7-0) remained undefeated with a 109-9 win over the Spartans, getting consistent effort from throughout the team, with Grant Widmer earning two wins in the 110-hurdles and the high jump.
The Timberwolves refused to take the senior-less Spartans lightly, cruising to victory even while resting some of their premier athletes.
“I told them all week at practice that we want to make sure we hold up our end of the bargain,” Sierra head coach Anthony Chapman said. “We wanted to make sure that we put ourselves in position to have a chance to run for a VOL championship next week.
“I’m assuming Oakdale will hold up its end of the bargain too.”
Sierra sits with an impressive 7-0 record on all four levels, giving the program an opportunity to close out the season with four perfect league runs. The girls rolled over Lathrop 110-8, while the two junior varsity clubs combined for 215-24 shellacking.
A clean sweep by the Timberwolves on both the varsity and junior varsity levels would be an impressive accomplishment to say the least, but Sierra’s season-long dominance cannot be overlooked win or lose against the Mustangs.
“A lot of teams don’t have this opportunity and we are very fortunate that we do,” Chapman said. “All four of our teams are going to be running for a championship in the last meet of the year.
“It all comes down to next week and I’m excited to see what happens.”
Janelle Engle made good on a first-half goal and Ripon Christian’s defensive unit made sure the goal stood as they outplayed the Crusaders over the final 40 minutes of action.
“What we were most happy with today was our intensity in the front third,” Ripon Christian head coach Travis Haveman said. “Many of our shots were a result of clean passing and smart ball movement.
“All of our girls came to play; they earned this win.”
The victory was not only the Knights’ first of the league season, but the school’s first-ever girls soccer win over Modesto Christian.
