Absent a second-inning infield single by East Union’s A.J. Vasquez, Oakdale pitcher Landon Schutte mowed down every batter he faced with a nearly perfect game supported by 11 Mustangs hits in a 10-0 six-inning mercy-rule win in Valley Oak League baseball action at Agostini Field.
“This was extremely frustrating,” Lancers coach Dan Bauer said. “We have to get better, we have to get better approaches — we just have to get better.
“We just have to get our bats going.”
With Oakdale (3-2 VOL, 5-6-1 overall) leading 8-0 after three innings, sophomore Ryan Guibor took the mound for East Union (0-2, 6-4) in the fourth inning and held the Mustangs scoreless in the fourth and the fifth innings before three walks and two hit batters yielded two runs for Oakdale in the sixth.
“Ryan (Guibor) did a good job,” Bauer said. “He’s young. It was good to get him a little experience.”
East Union center fielder Ace Avelar helped keep the Mustangs off the board in the fourth and fifth innings with two spectacular plays. With two on and two out in the fourth, Avelar chased down a high fly ball to left center at the fence to end that threat. Avelar did the same thing to the leadoff batter in the fifth.
“Ace can track the ball in center field pretty well,” Bauer said. “He runs well.”
Schutte struck out nine and allowed just two balls out of the infield.
“We were throwing first-pitch strikes today and we were letting our bats go early,” Mustangs coach Joey Machado said. “That’s what the boys did today and they did a good job with it.
“He (Schutte) did a great job throwing strikes.”
Glen Weber and Carlo Antinetti had the big bats for Oakdale with Weber going 2 for 2 with a two-run home run and two runs and Antinetti going 2 for 4 with two RBI and two runs.
The same two teams conclude their three-game series Friday at 4 p.m. at Oakdale.
