ROUNDUP: T’wolves get even with EU in hotly-contested tennis showdown

Sierra’s girls tennis team avenged an early-season loss to rival East Union, battling through the extreme heat while squeaking out three third sets to prevail 6-3 Thursday at Manteca Regional Tennis Center.

Mikayla Villalobos staved off Jalyssa Molina 5-7, 6-4, 7-5 to win the No. 1 singles match for Sierra. Elina Nguyen took the No. 3 match 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 against Miranda Renter.

The Timberwolves also claimed the Nos. 5 and 6 singles matches, as Ruth Beedi downed Gabriella Castillo 6-4, 6-1, and Munveer Dosanjh beat Shayla LaGrande, 6-2, 6-2.

Sierra’s No. 1 doubles team of Xitali Gonzalez and Janessa Felix helped clinch the match when it ousted Danica Sanchez and Danica Simpson, 6-2, 7-5. Evelin Garcia and Sadie Herrera won the No. 2 doubles match 3-6, 6-2, 10-8 against Samantha Escamilla and Jaklyn Virelas.

East Union got two hard-earned team points in singles action. No. 2 Gianna Fernandez outlasted Sasha Martin 5-7, 6-4, 8-6; and No. 4 Carrera Mendez defeated Puneet Gill, 7-5, 7-5.

The Lancers’ No. 3 duo of Roshel Mathew and Atyana Rodriguez were 6-0, 6-1 victors over Nadine Yamomo and Melissa Castillo.


GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Ripon 3, Hughson 0

The Indians (7-0, 18-1 overall) swept the Trans-Valley League match at Hughson (3-4, 11-9) 25-18, 25-18, 25-22 for their 10th straight victory.

Setter Katelyn Bogetti led them with 25 assists, four kills, one block and three digs. Outside hitter Adrianna Dorn blasted a match-best 17 kills. Shayla McKeon had 11 kills and two blocks. Jorie Eskes added eight kills and a block.

Chloe Lautenslager contributed three blocks, Kennedy Everhart served three aces and Emeri Lane netted five assists and five digs.


Hilmar 3, Ripon Christian 1

Looking to avenge a previous TVL loss, the visiting Knights (4-3, 10-12) took the opening set 25-18 before Hilmar (5-2, 16-7) took over to win the next three, 25-21, 25-18, 25-19.

Alyssa Hofman led RC’s defense with 15 digs and four blocks. Anneke Dyt contributed 14 digs. Setter Alanna Blanco also had 14 digs to go with 36 assists.

Paige Van Hofwegan spearheaded the attack with 15 kills, while Brynn Bohn and Haley Kootstra each added seven.

Ripon Christian swept both the junior varsity and freshman contests.


Central Catholic 3, East Union 0

The Lancers (3-5, 5-7 overall) could not get on track on the road against the VOL leader, falling, 6-25, 8-25, 9-25.

Katelyn Trevino tallied three kills and five digs. Meritiana Luani chipped in five digs and five assists. Marcella Carranza had four assists and five digs.


GOLF

Lathrop 331, Grace Davis 381

Low medalist Ashley Yuuki Abon Garcia led Lathrop with a 57 at Dryden Park Golf Course.

Grace Davis’ Jazlyn Mendez was the runner-up with a 63.

Other scorers for Lathrop: Kate Albisu (64), Yadira Hernandez (67), Madison Dash (68) and Kriselle Matela (75).


Frosh girls volleyball

Central Catholic 2, East Union 1

East Union narrowly took the opening set 26-24 but could not keep the momentum in dropping the next two, 19-25, 8-15.

Camille Christensen paced the attack with four kills and three aces. Kadence Rossi racked up six kills. Isabella Lopez contributed four kills and four blocks. Abbey Gueava served four aces, and Melanie Salazer had three kills.
