ROUNDUP: Spartans sweep Central Valley in tune-up for 1st-place volleyball showdown

Lathrop’s girls volleyball team handled visiting Central Valley 25-13, 25-10, 25-17 Wednesday ahead of its biggest Western Athletic Conference match of the season.

The Spartans (6-0, 10-4) will welcome reigning champion Beyer next Monday in a battle for first place.

Setter Ayden Petroff led them in the tune-up match with 22 assists, seven aces and four digs. Annie Millan amassed nine service aces to go with eight digs.

Elizabeth Andrade tallied 11 kills, seven digs and two aces. Siliana Fa’ataualofa contributed eight kills and three digs. Justine Mabutas headed the defense with 11 digs.


FLAG FOOTBALL

Lathrop 34, Central Valley 0

The Spartans (5-1 WAC, 11-2 overall) rebounded two days after suffering their first conference defeat to highly-ranked Livingston.

Quarterback Luz De Luna helped right the ship with her five-touchdown performance. She completed 18 of 26 passes for 256 yards and added 25 yards rushing.

Jaleiyah Ray caught five of those passes for 66 yards and two touchdowns. Faith Allen (59 yards) Heiddy Camacho (56 yards) and Tianna Gonzalez (38 yards) each had three receptions and a touchdown. Camacho was also on the receiving end on two successful tries.

Aaliyah Thompson contributed 41 rushing yards on five carries while recording two tackles and two sacks on defense. Sareah Reed led the Spartans with eight tackles. Dayanna Martinez, Camacho and Gonzalez each had an interception.


CROSS COUNTRY

Trans-Valley League

Ripon’s Isaiah Green came in fourth place in the varsity boys race during the second league meet at Mavis Stouffer Park. He clocked in at 16 minutes, 55.48 seconds, leading the Indians to second place in the team standings.

Moses Lucas Pascal Gomez (17:47.13) followed in eighth place, Emilio Machado Perez (18:21.47) in 13th, Milan Chun (18:23.63) in 14th and Cade Vallee (18:23.63) in 15th.

Freshman Hans Schoolland (18:09.63) paced Ripon Christian at 11th place. Ripon Christian took fifth as a team.

Ripon’s girls finished in third place with scoring contributions from Malia Locarnini (11th, 21:58.46), Mallory Govia (12th, 22:04.92), Izabella Rodriguez (14th, 22:33.75), Kyla Agbayani-Duenas (19th, 22:57.70) and Kember Duncan (20th, 23:01.90).

Ripon Christian took fifth as a team and was led by Addison De Jong (21st, 23:08.34).

Central Valley 2, Lathrop 1

The Spartans stumbled to a 25-8, 21-25, 13-15 defeat after dominating the opening set.

Araya Carson led Lathrop with four aces, three kills, three digs and a block. Taylor Johnwell also had three kills. Brianna Valencia pitched in two kills, two aces and three digs. Vivianna Salcedo added eight assists, four digs and three aces. Sarah Garcia collected nine digs and three aces.

Lilliyana Balandra’s interception return for a touchdown helped decide the WAC contest for the Spartans.

Quarterback Morgan Hegler completed six of seven throws including two for touchdowns to Cassidy Rudd (44 yards).

Mariana Coon contributed five tackles on defense.


Frosh girls volleyball

Lathrop 2, Central Valley 0

Lathrop swept 25-14, 25-16 behind Cassidy Fa’ali’i’s all-around effort. She accumulated two kills, three aces, five assists and six digs.

Alexza Bringas added five assists, four aces and three digs. Irshbir Bisla contributed three kills and two aces.
