Gabriel Fa’ali’i fired 17 kills, eight service and two solo blocks on Wednesday to lead Lathrop’s boys volleyball team to a 25-9, 25-11, 25-21 Western Athletic Conference sweep of visiting Pacheco.
Cameron Loyola contributed eight kills and one block for the Spartans (2-2 WAC, 9-5 overall). Meauta Miller added three kills, while Marc Llorin had two kills and two blocks.
Setter Mario Luna produced 29 assists and two aces. Elias Medel paced the back row with nine digs.
Lathrop hosts Weston Ranch for a non-league match tonight.
BOYS TENNIS
Sierra 8, Oakdale 1
The Timberwolves (5-1, 6-2 overall) end the first half of Valley Oak League play in second place with the road win.
Brady Alves staved off Camden Knighton 6-2, 7-5 to prevail in the No. 1 singles match. No. 2 Ashton Hillard defeated Jaxton Marler 7-6, 6-3, No. 3 Oliver Naven knocked off Levi Hensley 7-5,. 6-2, No. 5 Sparsh Beedi beat Austin Speiller 6-4, 7-6 and No. 6 Ryan Alves outlasted Tristan McCarthy, 6-2, 5-7, 10-5.
Matt Yakligian got the lone win for Oakdale (3-3, 5-3), downing Santiago Franco, 7-5, 6-2.
Sierra swept all three doubles matches in quick order, win wins coming from No. 1 Hasnain Ali/Harshith Kumar (6-1, 6-1), No. 2 Sid Gopendran/Zain Ali (6-2, 6-0) and No. 3 Alex Rey Rosario/Noah Brum (6-0, 6-1).
BASEBALL
Central Catholic 13, East Union 6
In Modesto, Brayden Camara resumed his early-season assault for East Union (0-1 VOL, 6-5 overall), going 3 for 4 with two steals, three runs, two RBIs, a triple and a homer. Peyton Heath added a solo homer, and Jackson Fay had an RBI double.
The Lancers ultimately could not keep pace with the reigning co-champion Raiders (4-2, 7-3), who broke away with a five-run fifth inning after East Union had tied it at 6-6 in the top half of the frame. Chase Perino and Broden Thomas both went 3 for 4 with three RBIs for Central Catholic.
SOFTBALL
Ceres 13, Lathrop 3 (6)
The Spartans (1-1 WAC, 4-3 overall) staked a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the third inning, but Ceres (1-1, 5-6) answered with 11 unanswered runs over the next three.
Luz DeLuna and Ja’Leiyah Ray each went 2 for 3 to lead Lathrop. Kendall Stewart added a double, and Maci DeCosta drove in a run and plated another.
Ava Montesdeoca anchored Ceres’ onslaught, going 4 for 4 with three runs, four RBIs and a triple.
JV boys volleyball
East Union 2, Oakdale 0
At Dalben Center, East Union (2-1 VOL, 5-4 overall) amassed 16 aces against just one missed serve en route to the 25-5, 25-6 sweep.
Daivon Johnson (two kills) and Julian Khoonsrivong served five aces apiece. Gunnar Fay fired three kills, and Alex Madrigal chipped in five assists and two aces.
Lathrop 2, Pacheco 1
The Spartans prevailed 25-22, 21-25, 15-10 in the back-and-forth battle.
They were paced by Jayden 11 kills, while Bryan Gamboa (two solo blocks) and Dylan Beltran had seven apiece.
Cayden Phaing distributed 23 assists. Christopher Ygay produced seven digs, two aces and two assists.
