ROUNDUP: Skiles garners 2 bronzes at Stanford track invite

Ripon High standout hurdler Starla Skiles was among the few local athletes to compete in the Stanford Invitational last weekend, and she led the way with two third-place finishes.

The senior, a state qualifier last year, set a personal record in the 100-meter hurdles at 14.47 seconds. She also competed in a 400-meter hurdles race for the first time, again placing third in 1 minute, 2.85 seconds.

Fellow Indian Clara Schoolland, another returning state qualifier, took sixth in the high jump with with a mark of 5 feet, 3 ¾ inches. Schoolland and Skiles were joined by Kayla Kroutil and Emily Paxton in the 4x400 relay, and the quartet recorded a season-best time of 4:07.13.

Ripon senior Marcus Madoski took seventh in the high jump, topping out at 6-01 ½.

Manteca had three male participants at Stanford. Oscar Angel set two personal records, taking fourth in the two-mile race in 9:15.42, and 14th in the mile in 4:16.76.

Jayden Scarver came in 10th in the 400 (49,12), and Joshua Mellion was 13th in the shot put (51-09).

BOYS TRACK

Lathrop 50, Pacheco 32

Ceres 51, Lathrop 31

The Spartans split their Western Athletic Conference double-dual meet Tuesday at Ceres.

Riley Gier (800), Treydon Santos (300 hurdles), Evarardo Gomez (high jump) and Gavin Miller (pole vault) were overall first-place finishers. Lathrop also won the 4x400.


GIRLS TRACK

Lathrop 71, Pacheco 2

Lathrop 62, Ceres 11

Melia Lewis spearheaded Lathrop’s two blowout wins with first-place finishes in the 100, 200, 4x100 and 4x400.

Ava Green took first in the 100 hurdles, second in the 300 hurdles and was part of the winning sprint relays. Ariana Matute (800), Jacquelyn Pena Santillan (1,600) and Mackenzie Collins (3,200) were individual winners in the distance events, and they also teamed up to win the 4x800.

Winners in field events: Erin Chunn (high jump), Alyvia Galano (pole vault), Faith Butler (long jump) and Sierra Adams (triple jump).


CCAA/MVL Meet 1

River Islands hosted the first of four meets for Central California Alliance and Mountain Valley League schools on Tuesday.

The Riptide boys and girls teams were runners-up to Venture Academy. Brianna Lee was among their top performers, taking first in the long jump, triple jump and 4x400. Veronica Erilim won the 100 and was part of the winning 4x100.

For the boys, Brenham Pader doubled in the 110 and 300 hurdles. Freshman Hansel Okpah bolted to first place in the 100, while Ronith Thumma won the 400. Ryan Mateo added first-place points in the triple jump.


SOFTBALL

Orestimba 2, Ripon 1

In Newman, Indians (4-1, 7-7 overall) had their streak of Trans Valley League victories end at 18.

The difference was Lily Rocha’s two-run double in the fourth inning for Orestimba (3-2, 6-8). Clara Townsend knocked in Savannah Chapman in the second inning for Ripon’s lone run.

Hailey Starr prevailed in the pitcher’s duel, as she struck out four while scattering six hits and no walks. Angelina Martinez was the tough-luck loser for Ripon. She gave up two unearned runs on five hits and one walk, striking out seven.


BASEBALL

Central Valley 14, Lathrop 0 (5)

Chris Garcia collected nine strikeouts over four innings for first-place Central Valley (9-0 WAC, 13-7 overall), and Tyson Hunt pitched a perfect fifth inning in the combined one-hitter.

Caden Mendonca highlighted the Hawks’ attack, going 3-for-3 with three runs, three RBIs and a triple.

Andrew Chunn got the lone hit for Lathrop (3-6, 5-12)


BOYS TENNIS

Sierra 8, Oakdale 1

The Timberwolves (9-2, 11-3 overall) locked up second place in the VOL with the lopsided victory.

Santiago Franco squeaked out a 6-4, 1-6, 11-9 win over Levi Hensley at No. 4 singles. Sierra’s third doubles team of Alex Rey Reyes and Noah Brum warded off Danny Llona and Abe Jeevan, 7-6, 7-5.

Winning in comfortable straight sets: No. 1 singles Brady Alves (6-0, 6-2), No. 2 Ashton Hillard (6-3, 6-3), No. 5 Harshith Kumar (5-3, 6-1), No. 6 Ryan Alves (6-3, 6-0), No. 1 doubles Sparsh Beedi/Hasnain Ali (6-0, 6-1) and No. 2 doubles Sid Gopendran/Zain Ali (6-0, 6-0).

Sierra caps regular-season play Thursday against Manteca.
