East Union plated two early runs at Patterson on Tuesday, and Mikayla Simpson held off the Tigers for a 2-1 Valley Oak League softball win.
The senior pitcher rung up eight strikeouts versus one walk in her two-hit masterpiece. Counterpart Desirrei Sorci also struck out eight, allowing four hits and one walk.
All of the scoring was done in the opening frame. The Lancers (1-2 VOL, 4-6 overall) struck first with RBIs from Leah Altstadt and Fallon Norman, driving in Savanna Lopez and Caliyah Lopez. Savanna Lopez finished 2-for-3 with two steals. Leeann Housley contributed a double.
Jazmine Isom plated an unearned run for Patterson (1-3, 7-8) in the bottom half.
East Union will look to build off its first league win of the season on Thursday when it heads to co-champion Oakdale.
Central Catholic 3, Manteca 1
Marissa San Nicolas went 3-for-3 and drilled a solo home run in the third inning for Manteca (2-2, 7-4), but it was not enough to overcome the reigning VOL co-champion Raiders (4-0, 11-4) in Modesto.
Central Catholic went ahead for good with two runs in the bottom of the third, and sophomore pitcher Stephanie Garcia took it from there. She gave up eight hits but issued no walks, while backed by an error-free defense.
COED TENNIS
Ripon 7, Millennium 2
In Tracy, the Indians netted a routine win behind six sweeps. The No. 2 girls tandem of Molly Berger and by Douglass pulled out the lone three-set match, coming back to knock off Jillian Credo and Katelyn Duncan, 1-6, 6-1, 10-5.
Contributing singles wins for Ripon: No.1 boys Tate Douglas (6-0, 6-0), No. 2 boys Matthew Tharakan (7-5, 6-1) and No. 2 girls Lily Meyer (6-0, 6-0).
Doubles winners: No. 1 boys Max Ferral/Emilio Machado Perez (6-0, 6-3), No. 1 girls Alyssa Lan/Sophie Douglas (6-3, 6-3) and mixed Emiley Wang/John Yeung (6-1, 6-0).
Millennium No. 1 girls singles player Thao Trosien defeated Brookelyn Betschart, 6-4, 6-0. Michael Abeoledo and David Garza won the No. 2 doubles match 6-1, 6-1 against Nate Denhart and David Rodriguez.
BASEBALL
Lathrop 8, Johansen 3
Visiting Johansen (0-5, 5-8-1 overall) led the Western Athletic Conference game 2-0 after two innings. The Spartans (3-2, 5-8) jumped ahead for good with a four-run rally in the bottom of the second.
Freshman Vaughn Sanchez pitched 4 2/3 innings in relief for the win, finishing with six strikeouts while surrendering one run on five hits and two walks. Jordan Blase was the starter.
Sanchez also contributed offensively with a double, a run and two RBIs. Tommy Hammond went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Nazir Jones was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and an RBI. Ayden Louie was also 2-for-3 with two steals and a run.
