ROUNDUP: Sierra wins VOL double-dual track meet at East Union

Sierra racked up much of its points in the distance races on Thursday, as the Timberwolves’ boys and girls teams both outpointed host East Union in a Valley Oak League dual meet at Dino Cunial Stadium.

Christian Gonzalez led Sierra sweeps in the 800- and 1,600-meter runs in a 79-61 win over the Lancers. The girls prevailed 85-52, betting first-place points in all distance events.

Ernesto Pacheco Jr. won the two-mile run in a 1-2-3 finish for the Timberwolves in the boys competition. Mantoj Grewal won the 110 hurdles, 300 hurdles and was on the winning 4x400 with individual 300 victor Anthony Glover.

Teagan Nazzisi spearheaded Sierra’s 1-2-3 in the shot put. Sierra also won the 4x800 relay.

Double winners for the Sierra girls include Kristella Harnden-Muratalla (100 hurdles, 300 hurdles) and Olivia Knott (pole vault, long jump). Winning distance events were Serena Dittman (800, 4x800), Anna Dittman (1,600) and Monserrat Saavedra (3,200).

Anayah Wills (100) and Janessa Barnes (400, 4x400) led Sierra’s sprinters.

The East Union boys ruled the jumping events. Blake Mount led the Lancers’ dominant effort in the high and long jumps, Patrick Walsh Archibeque won the triple jump and Sean Rutter a pole vault.

Discus Rossi (discus), Jackson Fay (100, 4x100) and Cesar Salinas (200) also contributed first-place points for the Lancers.

Kadence Rossi highlight EU’s girls with win in the shot put and discus. Kinsley Herrera sprinted to wins in the 200 and 4x100. Journi Dixon (high jump) and Jada Stevens (triple jump) also won individual events.


BOYS TRACK

Manteca 85, Mountain House 51

Jayden Scarver won the 200, 400 and was on the first-place 4x100 relay, as the Buffaloes took care of visiting Mountain House.

Fellow sprinter Julian Moncada took first in the 100, was the 200 runner-up but joined Scaver on the 400 relay.

William Brown (110 hurdles, 300 hurdles), Joshua Mellion (shot put, discus) and Tyler Watkins (high jump, triple jump) were double winners for Manteca. Victor Espinoza (800, 4x800) and Oscar Angel (1,600) also keyed the VOL win.


GIRLS TRACK

Mountain House 84, Manteca 48

Raniya Nelson was the Buffaloes’ lone double winner, taking first in the shot put and discus.

Paisley Coenenberg won the 1,600 but took second in the 3,200. Teammate Jordyn Hegarty won the 3,200 and was the 1,600 runner-up. Ryan Steckler added a win in the high jump.


SOFTBALL

NorCal Classic ‘Big 12’

Manteca 6, Le Grand 0 (5)

Riley Ward struck out 12 in the three-hit shutout at Legacy Fields in Tracy.

She got all the run support early, as the Buffaloes (18-5) did all of their damage in the first three innings.

Jocelyn Baptist led the offense, going 2-for-2 with a double, a run and an RBI. Ava Avila racked up eight strikeouts for Le Grand (13-6).


Manteca 6, Ceres 5 (6)

The Buffaloes amassed 14 hits and got the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning to advance to the semifinal round of their bracket.

Sienna Owen powered them with a home run and three RBIs, finishing 3-for-4. Bella Cooper (double, two runs), Maleiah Garza (RBI), Ayva Wilkins (two runs, two RBIs, double, two steals), Na’ima Calderon (double, RBI) and Lauren Moncada contributed two hits apiece.

Winning pitcher Isabel Tonna fired eight strikeouts. Manteca faces Holt Academy this morning at 8.


Holt Academy 6, Lathrop 2

Errors led to four unearned runs in the loss for Lathrop (10-9), spoiling a solid pitching effort from Maci De Costa (seven strikeouts, walk, eight hits).

De Costa also had a hand in both of her team’s runs, plating with with a double. She scored on Kendall Stewart’s base hit.


West 12, Lathrop 6 (6)

The two teams combined for a whopping 28 hits.

Ja’Leiyah Ray accounted for three of those hits for Lathrop. She also scored twice and had two steals. Tatianna Lopez finished 2-for-2 with three RBIs. Tianna Gonzalez hit a solo home run, going 2-for-4.

The Spartans take on Bear Creek this morning at 10.


NorCal Classic ‘ACC’

Ripon 13, Pitman 1 (4)

The Indians opened the tournament with a nine-run rally in the first inning.

Alana Hernandez led the charge, going 3-for-3 with two runs, a triple and an RBI. Clara Townsend (run, two RBIs) and Chloe Lautenslager (two runs, two RBIs) each had two hits.

Pitcher Angelina Martinez threw a mercy-shortened two-hitter that included seven strikeouts.


Ripon 11, Millennium 1

Alana Hernandez (2-for-3, two runs, three hits, triple), Angelina Martinez, (2-for-2, two runs), Addison Naramjo (2-for-3, two runs, double, three RBIs) and Izabelle Spurzem (2-for-2, three runs, two RBIs) each clubbed a home run in Ripon’s 14-hit attack.

Clara Townsend (three innings) and Alexandra Dubbs (one inning) handled pitching duties for the Indians, who next face Pacheco today at noon followed by a meeting with Gustine at 2.


BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Ripon Christian 3, Hilmar 0

The Knights honored their three seniors Thursday in the 25-10, 25-9, 25-10 victory.

Setter Joel Hendricks, out all season with an injury, gave them an early spark with an ace on the opening serve. Fellow seniors Isaiah Vander Woude (14 kills) and Jackson Anema (six kills) also had productive showings.

The Trans Valley League champions will find out their placement in the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs today.


BOYS TENNIS

Valley Oak League Tournament

Manteca’s top-seeded pairing of Yok Chai Ma and Miguel Amo was upset in the quarterfinal round at Patterson. No doubles teams from the area are moving on to the SJS Division II Individual Tournament, and only two made it as far as the quarterfinals.

After a first-round bye, Ma and Amo edged past Sierra’s Santiago Franco and Harshith Kumar, 9-8 (6). Patterson’s Francisco Hernandez and Carlos Romero stunned the No. 1 seed, 9-8 (4).

East Union’s Andrew Delgado and Jithin Joy reached the quarters with an 8-4 win over Sierra’s Ryan Alves and Sparsh Beedi. The Lancers then lost 8-2 to No. 2-seeded Aprameya Rao and Sri Kotaprolu of Mountain House, the eventual champions.
