ROUNDUP: Sierra swims past East Union; Lathrop’s DeCosta pitches no-no

Sierra’s girls swim team won decisively 140-28 in a Valley Oak League dual meet at East Union on Friday, while the boys prevailed, 72-40.

The visiting Timberwolves took first in all girls races.

Keira Brink (50 free, 100 free) and Bianca Fraser (100 fly, 200 IM) were part of four first-place finishes. They were also on the winning 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays. Gianna Ramos won the 50 free and joined Brink and Fraser on the 200 medley and 400 free relays.

Kaylee Hayne (100 breast, 200 medley relay), Stephanie Thomason (200 free) and Elianah Zhou (100 back) each contributed wins in individual events. Kenidee Bauer, Phoebe Burke, Abigail Fraser and Sadie Herrera won the 200 free relay. Charlene Trinh was part of the first-place 400 free relay.

Bayan Ballew (50 free, 100 fly, 200 free relay, 400 free relay) anchored the Sierra boys. Carson Murray (100 free, 200 free relay, 400 free relay) was in on three race victories. Noah Sandoval (200 free, 200 free relay), Travis Moore (500 free, 400 free relay) and Dallin Murray (200 free relay, 400 free relay) were other key contributors.

East Union was paced by Luke Hawkinson, who claimed the 200 individual medley and 100 breast. Alex Freeman won the 100 back, and the duo were part of the winning 200 medley relay.


BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Lathrop 3, Grace Davis 1

After two quick sets, Lathrop (2-2, 11-5 overall) held on to finish the Western Athletic Conference match in four sets, 25-9, 25-12, 21-25, 25-20.

Mario Luna facilitated the host Spartans’ balanced attack with 36 assists, adding three service aces. Gabriel Fa’ali’i amassed 16 kills to go with two aces, two blocks and six aces.

Cameron Loyola followed with eight kills, Meuta Miller had seven and Marc Llorin five. They each also had one solo block. Elias Medel led the defense with nine digs.


BASEBALL

Hughson 12, Ripon Christian 1 (5)

Jordan Luisi drove in Jack DeJong in the fifth inning for Ripon Christian’s lone run. The Knights (0-3, 6-6 overall) had just other hits, which came from sophomores Mateo Ceja and Tyler Wadlow.

Benji Ocegueda pitched the three-hitter for Hughson (3-0, 10-2), striking out seven. Dominic Aguiar led the Huskies’ nine-hit attack with three knocks of his own and three runs scored.


SOFTBALL

Lathrop 16, Johansen 0 (5)

Maci DeCosta twirled a mercy-shortened no-hitter for the host Spartans (2-1 WAC, 5-3 overall), walking four and hitting one, while striking out 13.

Tatianna Lopez and Kendall Stewart (2 for 2) drove in three runs apiece. Tianna Gonzalez went 3-for-4 with a triple, two steals, two runs and two RBIs. Lathrop totaled nine hits and drew 11 walks.


Sheldon 11, Manteca 0 (5)

The Buffaloes (7-3) took on a tough non-league challenge in Sacramento, falling to one of the top teams in the Sac-Joaquin Section.

Sheldon (5-3) got a combined two-hitter from Kwinci Brown and Micah Kennedy. Jayana Dias and Maleiah Garza got the hits for Manteca.


JV boys volleyball

Lathrop 2, Grace Davis 0

Lathrop swept the WAC match, 25-18, 25-18.

Bryan Gamboa paced the Spartans with eight kills and two aces. Jayden White racked up five kills, three aces and a solo block. Cayden Phaing compiled 18 assists and two aces. Christopher Ygay contributed seven digs and two aces.

Sierra 93, East Union 20

Abigail Garcia was the top points scorer for Sierra with wins in the 50 free, 50 fly and 200 free relay.

Also contributing with wins for Sierra: Rylee Daniel (100 IM), Maria Portilla (100 free, 200 free relay), Meghan Klein (50 back, 200 free relay) and Jewels Shinn (50 breast, 200 free relay).
