Sierra’s girls water polo team was dominant in its first game of the season Wednesday, routing visiting Justin Garza of Fresno, 11-1. The matchup took place at Lathrop High.

The Timberwolves led 5-0 after the first period and scored the first 10 goals.

Lauren Ellis led a balanced attack with three goals, and Amy Fadeff netted two. Hailey Danel, Gianna Ramos, Keira Brink, Steph Thomason, Molly Allen and Bianca Fraser added one each.

Keira Brink (block) started in goal but made way for Ramos (five blocks) and Fadeff (two) after the opening quarter.

Sierra’s shutout bid was spoiled with 2:36 to go when Amelie Sanchez scored for the previously-unbeaten Guardians (4-1).

The Timberwolves return to action next Tuesday at Edison of Stockton.

 

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Ripon Christian 3, Escalon 0

In a battle of reigning Sac-Joaquin Section champions, Ripon Christian rolled to a 25-14, 25-17, 25-17 sweep and improved to 6-0.

“Escalon played hard and hung around in all three games through the first half, but consistent, smart play allowed us to pull away to take the wins,” RC coach Kayla Kootstra said.

Sydney Hoffman and Jordan Vander Veen spearheaded the balanced Knights with 10 kills apiece, while Leah Van Wyngarden contributed nine. Hoffman finished with an impressive .769 hitting percentage without errors.

Dayna Koolhaas keyed the win with lengthy service runs and totaled four aces. Megan Weststeyn racked up 32 assists, and Allison Brown came up with 12 digs.

 

Pitman 3, Sierra 1

Sierra (3-5) continued its ambitious schedule and faced an SJS Division I semifinalist at home Thursday. The Pride (12-1) from Turlock won 24-26, 25-19, 25-17, 25-14.

Zoe Kossart paced the Timberwolves with eight kills and eight digs. Sophia Marian also put away eight kills, while Abby Chapman had five. Karlie Burns added 13 digs and four aces.

 

East Union 3, Beyer 2

The Lancers (5-3) knocked off the defending Western Athletic Conference champion, 25-14, 20-25, 19-25, 25-15, 15-7.

Mariela Navarro stood out in the front row, finishing with 12 kills and 10 blocks. Jatziry Garcia accumulated 11 kills, 23 digs, six assists and two aces.

Setter Marcella Carranza rung up 34 assists, 23 service points, three aces and eight digs. Gisele Velazquez contributed nine kills and 27 digs, and Meritiana Luani chipped in seven kills, 10 assists and 32 digs.

 

GIRLS GOLF

Tokay 299, Manteca 300

Two days after winning by a stroke, the Buffaloes experienced the other end of that in a non-league match Thursday at Manteca Park Golf Course.

Emily Camare led them with a 52, and Alesia Harris carded a season-low 57. Kylie Elliott (61), Kayla Flannigan (64) and Alyssa Rattanasack (66) rounded out scoring for Manteca.

 

JV volleyball

East Union 2, Beyer 0

Shebra Rezaye and Lilly Grove anchored the attack with 13 and 11 assists, respectively. Bailey Ford fired six kills, and Jill Ramirez netted six aces and four digs. Gwen Baker led the defense with eight digs.

 

Frosh volleyball

Beyer 2, East Union 0

The Lancers narrowly dropped the first set and were swept, 24-26, 10-25.

Andi Guibor led them with nine service points and four aces. Kaylee Braun added six points and one ace. Kennedy Mcleod hammered a pair of kills.
