ROUNDUP: Shorthanded Riptide open CCAA play victorious

 Down two starters to sickness, the River Islands boys basketball team took care of visiting Turlock Christian 63-52 Tuesday in a Central California Athletic Alliance opener at EPIC Academy.

Sharpshooting guard Charles Mapanao helped pick up the slack for the Riptide (1-0, 9-7 overall), pouring in 18 points behind five made 3-pointers. He was also 3-for-3 from the free-throw line after drawing a foul while attempting a 3-pointer.

Freshman forward Zach Basurto added 10 points, and Ty Phan scored 10 off the bench Jaiveer Grewal and Darius Radoc Factoran contributed eight apiece.

River Islands faces Ripon Christian on the road tonight for a non-league contest. It’s a rematch of their Dec. 6 meeting in Ron Peterson Tip-Off Tournament at Riverbank. Ripon Christian won handily, 70-42.


Ripon 85, Orestimba 49

The Indians (2-0, 10-8 overall) led the Trans-Valley League game by 17 points at halftime and made it a rout with a 24-5 third-quarter burst.

Marcus Madoski scored 25 points in three quarters. Logan Lefebvre contributed 15 points, Gino Calderara had 13, Ethan Bauer netted 10 and Andrew Shaw chimed in with nine.

Mathew Wales and Devon Bell paced Orestimba (0-2, 5-10) with 14 and 13 points, respectively.

Ripon goes to in-town rival Ripon Christian on Friday.


GIRLS BASKETBALL

Lathrop 50, Johansen 47

Missing key players to illnesses, the Spartans (1-3, 8-10 overall) were still able to snap a four-game slide in Modesto, while picking up their first Western Athletic Conference win of the season.

They battled back from a 10-point halftime deficit, outscoring the Vikings (0-4, 6-12) 14-6 in the third quarter.

Faith Allen led Lathrop with 14 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Jaleiyah Ray racked up 12 points, 12 rebounds and four steals. Shakara Porter produced nine points and six rebounds. Abby Renteria pitched in eight points.


Ripon 41, Orestimba 38

In Newman, Ripon (2-0 TVL, 9-9 overall) led 23-14 at halftime and held on for the victory, thanks to Anandjap Dhami’s productive second half. She scored 10 of her 14 points over the final two quarters. Kaylee Lehmkuhl added nine points.

Orestimba (0-2, 9-7) was spearheaded by Ashlynn Bell’s 20 points.


BOYS SOCCER

Patterson 5, Sierra 0

Plagued by injuries, visiting Sierra (3-2, 10-3 overall), could not keep up with the Valley Oak League-leading Tigers (5-0-1, 9-0-4 overall), who had five different goal scorers.


JV girls basketball

Lathrop 35, Johansen 26

A close game for three quarters, the Spartans (4-0 WAC) gained separation by holding Johansen scoreless in the fourth.

Zohi Ali led them with nine points and eight steals. Jazmine Sorrell-Williams was also effective on both ends of the court, finishing with six points, 12 rebounds and three steals.


Frosh girls basketball

Lathrop 34, Johansen 17

Kaliyah Urrutia was close to a triple-double with nine points, nine rebounds and six steals in the lopsided win.

Brittany Valladares anchored Lathrop (4-0 WAC) with eight points, 10 rebounds and five steals. Ishaan Singh added six points and five boards.
