ROUNDUP: Ripon soccer teams top TVL standings

The Ripon boys soccer team’s turnaround under first-year coach Jose Montes continued Friday with a 4-1 win against visiting Sonora.

Through four four matches in the Trans-Valley League, the Indians (3-0-1, 9-7-1 overall) find themselves at the top of the table.

They exploded for three second-half goals against the Wildcats (2-3, 3-9), getting two of them from penalty kicks converted by Armin Grewal and Alejandro Prieto.

Brian Machado accounted for Ripon’s first-half goal, which was assisted by Leo Barrera. Wesal Afzalf scored in the second half with the pass coming from Armando Ayon.

Goalie Anthony Rivera finished with five saves.


Ripon Christian 5, Escalon 5

In Escalon, Ripon Christian (0-3-1 TVL, 5-4-3 overall) rallied to score all five of its goals in the second half to escape with a draw. The host Cougars (0-3-1, 1-8-4) had a two-goal halftime lead.

Freshman Collin Lecain spearheaded the Knights’ comeback with a hat trick. Isaiah Vander Woude had a goal and an assist. Aaron Van Hofwegan contributed a goal, and Daniel Lambdin an assist.

Goalkeeper Wesley Vander Woude racked up four saves.


GIRLS SOCCER

Ripon 3, Sonora 1

Five-time defending TVL champion Ripon (4-0, 8-3-2) has sole possession of first place after the commanding road win.

Olivia Maragos scored a brace, and Dani Rey put away the other goal. Sofia Cabello, Jordan Meeuwse and Starla Skiles each notched an assist.

Kylie Wiggins played in place of regular starting goalkeeper Ellena Parenti and collected seven saves. The Indians had a 22-8 shot advantage.

Addison Kraft scored the lone goal for Sonora (3-1-1, 5-2-1), which had 13 saves from Allyson Holland.


Ripon Christian 4, Escalon 0

It was all Ripon Christian (2-2 TVL, 8-4-1 overall), although the score line did not show it at halftime.

The Knights broke free from the 0-0 deadlock with a second-half explosion led by freshman Naomi Hendricks, who had one goal and assists to Alanna Blanco and Lauren Mouw. Brooke Barnes punctuated the barrage with the assist from Tessa Schoolland.

Morgan Schenk tallied seven saves.


BOYS BASKETBALL

Ripon Christian 60, Hughson 32

The Knights (2-0 TVL, 12-4 overall) trailed 8-2 midway through the first quarter but ended the half on a 27-3 flurry.

Jake Vander Veen led the reigning champions with 17 points and five rebounds. Mason Tameling added 15 points, draining three 3s in the second half. Chase Bunnell contributed eight points, 10 rebounds, four assists and two blocks. Amos Cady had seven points, seven rebounds and four steals. Walker Postma chipped in seven points, nine boards and three blocks.

Jackson Gehrke scored 12 points to pace the visiting Huskies (0-2, 9-9).


Lathrop 60, Ceres 43

The Spartans (3-0, 7-9 overall) continued its strong start in Western Athletic Conference play.

Caiden Wisnieski led the home team with 16 points and eight rebounds. Bryan Gamboa pitched in 12 points. Joseph Perkins had nine points and four assists.

Lathrop’s JV team also won, 43-22. The freshmen prevailed, 60-41.


JV boys soccer

Ripon 5, Sonora 1

Cade Vallee tallied one goal and two assists for Ripon.

Kalvin Martin (goal, assist), Diego Radia (goal), Kailan Swick (goal), Julian Monreal (assist) and Steven Marzouk (goal) also had scoring contributions.

Goalie Lucas Weaver compiled five saves.
