ROUNDUP: Ripon High golfers take first in John Montano Invitational in Merced

It was a great day at the Merced Golf & Country Club for Ripon High.

In the 22nd annual John Montano Invitational, the Indians captured first place behind the stellar efforts of Cru Sullivan (74), Andrew Bogetti (76), and Vincent Uecker (77) on the 18-hole course.

Alan Bunchien chipped in with an 81, giving Ripon the top overall score 308 to edge out second-place Granada (313) Individually, Sullivan took fifth place while Bogetti and Uecker placed seventh and ninth, respectively, in the large field.

Oakdale (315) placed third, Turlock (318) was fourth, and Tracy (338) came in fifth.

The Indians JV team tied Bret Harte for sixth, with both teams carding 341s.


BASEBALL 

East Union 5, Laguna Creek 3 

ELK GROVE – The visiting Lancers defeated Laguna Creek Monday in non-league action.

East Union (6-3) was led by Blake Mount, who went 2 for 3 including a triple, scoring a run and delivering an RBI. Kirk Simoni, Brayden Camara, Joe Alvarez, and Randy Martinez also drove in a run each against the Cardinals (5-2) of the Delta League.

Alvarez, who pitched 6.2 innings while allowing two earned runs to go with four walks and seven strikeouts, was the winning pitcher.

East Union scored twice in the first and added three more in the third to take a 5-0 lead. Laguna Creek scored all of its runs in the seventh.


BOYS VOLLEYBALL 

RC takes third in Golden Valley Tournament 

Ripon Christian High took third in the Golden Valley Tournament.

The Knights went 7-1 during the weekend event, defeating Sunnyside in the third-place match, 25-19, 25-18.

In pool play, RC went 4-0 during pool play, beating out Atwater (25-20, 25-14), Buhach Colony (25-9, 25-14), Fresno High (25-7, 25-14), and Gregori (25-19, 25-21).

On Day 2, the Knights suffered their only loss, falling to Livingston in three hardfought games in the Gold Bracket pool play, 22-25, 25-22, 11-15.

RC posted wins over Merced (25-17, 25-18) and host Golden Valley (25-17, 25-12).

Individually, Mason Tameling had 71 kills along with 19 aces in the tournament, with Isaiah Vander Woude coming up with 43 kills, 16 blocks, and scoring on 17 aces.

In addition, Darren Van Groningen also tallied 43 kills along with 12 blocks while Danny Lambdin dished out 149 assists to go with nine aces and five blocks.


Mountain House 3, East Union 0

The Lancers opened Valley Oak League play Monday by falling to the Mustangs, who delivered with scores of 25-23, 25-20, 25-8.

East Union (0-1 VOL, 4-2) was led by Marvin Mentor (13 assists), Guadalupe Reyes (11 kills, three digs), Keenan Yang (10 digs, seven points) and Jacob Padilla (four kills, four blocks).

The Lancers will travel Central Catholic on Wednesday.


Manteca 3, Patterson 0

The Buffaloes (1-0 VOL, 7-3) opened league play Monday by rolling past Patterso (0-1, 2-2), 25-15, 25-10, 25-22.

Manteca will continue league play next week by traveling to Central Catholic.


JV boys volleyball

Mt. House 2, East Union 0

The Lancers fell to the Mountain House Mustangs in two games, 17-25, 11-25.

“Players had to play out of position and despite the errors, they fought through those tough moments and did not give up,” said EU coach Chris Barnes.

Alex Madrigal had three assists for EU, followed by Gunnar Fay and Oliver Desjardin with two kills each, Jon Apsay had a kill, and James Russell chipped with a block.
