 Ripon Christian’s coed tennis team is nearing an undefeated finish in its first season back in the Trans Valley League.

On Thursday, the Knights took care of rival Ripon 8-1 to improve to 11-0 in league. They’ll cap the regular season today at Hughson.

The match at Ripon was more competitive than the final score, with two matches being decided on third sets. Tatum Sonke surged past Brookelyn Betschart 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 1 singles match. At No. 1 girls doubles, Sophia Cheney and Annika Jung outlasted Alyssa Lan and Sophie Douglas, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3.

There were also some tight matches that only went two sets. In No. 1 boys singles, Drew Meester held off Tate Douglas, 6-1, 7-6 (3). Ripon Christian’s top boys doubles team of Peter Vander Meulen and Derek Meester repelled the Indians’ Max Ferral and Emilio Machado Perez, 7-6 (5), 6-4.

Also picking up wins for Ripon Christian: No. 2 boys singles Alton Mensonides (6-0, 6-0), No. 2 girls singles Kora Harris (6-2, 6-0), No. 2 boys doubles Emmitt Van Laar/Braden Schaapman (6-4, 6-1) and mixed doubles Brittany Dugo/Christian Runnels (6-0, 6-2).

The No. 2 girls doubles tandem of Molly Berger and Abby Douglas earned the lone win for Ripon, 6-2, 6-3.


BOYS GOLF

TVL Tournament No. 5

Ripon Christian ended Ripon’s run of tournament wins in the TVL edging the Indians out by two strokes at The Reserve at Spanos Park.

Matthew Ubick and Trey Van Groningen anchored the Knights’ 408 total, finishing at 3-over-par 75 and 4-over 76, respectively. Freshman Hudson Schenk added an 83, Carter Van Groningen an 84 and Ben Miller a 90.

Runner-up Ripon was paced by Vincent Uecker’s 78. The freshman trio of Andrew Bogetti (79), Alan Bunchien (80) and Cru Sullivan (86) were also part of the Indians’ top five. Richie Hughes capped scoring with an 87.

Hughson came in third place with a 487, with Hilmar (547), Sonora (619), Escalon (DQ) and Orestimba (DQ) following.


Western Athletic Conference

Sophomore Brayden Beckman is 4-for-4 as low medalist in WAC Tournaments, so far, and he has led Lathrop to three straight team wins.

The Spartans netted a 469 at Creekside Golf Course in Modesto. Beckman carded a 7-over 79. Raphael Iniguez turned in a 92, while Jared Isla and Jayden Wall each contributed a 94. Ashneil Jeet added a 110.

Lathrop hosts the fifth WAC tournament next Thursday, April 10 at Manteca Park Golf Course.


Valley Oak League

East Union (459) held off rivals Manteca (466) and Sierra (468) for third place in the second league tournament held at Oakdale Golf & Country Club.

Host Oakdale (391) beat out Central Catholic (436) by a wide margin for the top spot. The Mustangs had the top three individuals in low medalist Estuardo Duque (73), Nolan Harris (74) and Fred Herschbach (79).

Michael Pires of East Union was the area’s top performer with an 81. Cody Camarena (89), Tiago Chadina (93), Xavier Guerrero (94) and Drew Kalin (102) were the Lancers’ other scorers.

Manteca was led by Ethan Freitas’ 82. Following him were Cooper Chamberlain (91), Gael Juarez (93), Sebastian Cabrales (98) and Logan Pool (102).

Jace Neto paced Sierra with a 90 and was backed by 92s from Carson Murray and Jake Llamas Mojarro. Jorrdan Llamas Mojarro added a 94, and Isaiah Yanez a 100.


BOYS TENNIS

Mountain House 9, Sierra 0

The second match-up between reigning Sac-Joaquin Section champions belonged to the Mustangs (11-0 VOL, 16-1 overall), who clinched a championship in their first year in the VOL.

Sierra (8-2, 10-3) made things interesting in doubles play, where the Timberwolves dropped a par of three-set matches. The No. 1 duo of Sparsh Beedi and Hasnain Ali came up short against Anirudh Baskar and Shamukh Sundaranedi, 5-7, 6-1, 5-10. The second pairing of Sid Gopendran and Zain Ali lost 1-6, 6-4, 8-10 against Sid Sanegepalli and Nikhslep Totamalla.

Mountain House’s Eidan Mercado downed reigning VOL singles runner-up Brady Alves 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. The No. 6 singles match was competitive between Ryan Alves and Sehej Ahvja, with Mountain House’s Ahvja prevailed, 6-4, 6-4.


BOYS TRACK & FIELD

Sierra 114, Patterson 23

The Timberwolves overwhelmed their hosts at Patterson Community Stadium.

Evan Greenwood won the long and triple jumps. Teagan Nazzisi (shot put), Asaad Doby (discus) and Mirwais Fazli (high jump) also took first in field events.

Sierra picked up first-place points in the 4x100, 4x400 and 4x800 relays.

Individual track standouts include Francis Bravo (100, second 200, 4x100), Nathan Perez (200, 4x100), Kenneth Roach (400, second 800, 4x800, Landen Nabb (800, 4x800), Christian Gonzalez 1,600, second 3,200) and Mantoj Grewal (110 hurdles, second 300 hurdles).

The host Indians dominated the double dual Wednesday at Ripon.

Nathan Gaines was the overall winner in the 100 and 200 and part of the winning 4x100. Lucas de Vera (800), and Isaiah Green (3,200) took first in distance races.

Logan Lefebvre (300 hurdles, long jump, second 110 hurdles), Ryan Bell (shot, discus) and Marcus Madoski (high jump, long jump) were other big points producers. Elias Ramirez added first-place points in the pole vault.

Among the standouts for Ripon Christian: Amos Cady (100, 200), Jack Dooley (long jump) and Trevor Van Elderen (800, 1,600).


GIRLS TRACK & FIELD

Sierra 86.5, Patterson 52.5

Anayah Wills blazed to first-place sprints in the 100, 200 and 4x100. Janessa Barnes won the 400, and Alyssa Rodriguez the 800. Both were on the first-place mile relay. Alani Mullenix was also on the 4x100 and 4x400 relays.

Anna Dittman doubled in the 1,600 and 3,200. Kristella Harnden-Muratalla (110 hurdles, second 300), Mia Ona (pole vault) and Olivia Knott (triple jump, second long jump)


Ripon 96, Orestimba 39

Olivia Maragos (100, long jump, 4x100) and Starla Skiles (100 hurdles, 300 hurdles, 4x100) were both in on three-event victories for Ripon.

Rylee Agbayani-Duenas won the 200, and she joined Maragos and Skiles on the 4x100. Kaiya Kroutil took first in the 400 and led the winning 4x400. Emily Paxton (pole vault) was also on the 4x100, and freshman Olivia Ellis ran for both relays.

Clara Schoolland won the high jump, took second in the 300 hurdles and was on the 4x400. Jorie Eskes won the shot put.

Christiana Lambdin highlighted Ripon Christian with an overall first place in the discus throw.

The battle for first place in Valley Oak League baseball seemed like anything but on Monday with eight combined errors, but Manteca relief pitcher Jimmy Burns pitched a perfect seventh inning, striking out the side in order to preserve the Buffaloes’ lead in their 9-7 win over visiting Central Catholic.
