ROUNDUP: Ripon boys place 2nd in TVL cross country opener

Isaiah Green came in sixth place, leading the Ripon boys cross country team to a runner-up finish in the Trans-Valley League opener held Wednesday at Mavis Stouffer Park.

With 51 points, Hughson outpaced Ripon (60) for the top spot. Sonora (75), Ripon Christian (101), Orestimba (106), Hilmar (147) and Escalon (152) followed.

In varsity girls, Hughson (37) held off Hilmar (41) for first place. Ripon (59) took third, and Ripon Christian (107) edged Escalon (108) for fourth.

Green was the top individual from the area, clocking a time of 17 minutes, 59.29 seconds. Teammate Moses Lucas Pascal Gomez (eighth, 18:05.19) also finished in the top 10. Jonathan Salinas (18:46.08), Emilio Machado Perez (18:56.57) and Miguel Acosta-Pearson (19:20.52) placed 13th, 15th and 18th, respectively.

Ripon Christian was spearheaded by freshman Hans Scholland (18:35.95), who took 11th. Matijs Zylstra (19:10.33) finished 16th.

Sonora’s Broen Holman won the 5,000-meter varsity boys race in 16:00.03, while Sophie Benham of Hughson was the top female in 19:49.39.

Mallory Govia (23:12.06) and Malia Locarnini (23:17.91) were eighth and ninth for Ripon, respectively. Kember Duncan (25:00.46) took 15th, and Izabella Rodriguez (25:53.58) was 17th.

Addison DeJong led Ripon Christian’s girls with a 14th-place finish in 24:57.18. Freshman Kate Thompson took 20th in 26:24.66.

Ripon had the top teams at the JV level.

Milan Chun (12:47.97) and Cade Vallee (12:57.87) went 1-2 for in the 2-mile boys race. Landon Morse and Lucas de Vera followed from the 5-6 positions.

Ripon’s Violet Wagner (16:38.88) and Katya Vega (16:43.94) finished 4-5 in the girls competition. Valeria Martinez and Ailin Delgado were the 8-9 finishers.


GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Ripon Christian 3, Central Catholic 1

The young Knights (5-7) continue to gain valuable experience, this time doing so in a 25-23, 19-25, 26-24, 25-22 home win over the reigning Valley Oak League champion Raiders (3-1).

Kara Koolhaas served the final eight points of the match, as Ripon Christian climbed back from a 22-17 deficit.

Defense keyed the win. Brynn Bohn and Anna Blanco led the way with four and three blocks, respectively. Anneke Dyt and Paige Van Hofwegen amassed 23 and 20 digs.

Morgan Schenk led a balanced attack with 10 kills. Haley Kootstra and Van Hofwegen each had eight, and Bohn doled out seven. Blanco orchestrated the offense and had 31 assists. Van Hofwegen added four service aces to her productive stat line.

Ripon Christian’s JV swept 25-20, 25-12 behind Alyssa Hofman’s 11 kills. Bella Blanco chipped in seven digs, Brooke Barnes served three aces and Annika Jung handed out 21 assists.

The Knights also won the freshman match, 25-23, 20-25, 15-11.


Ripon 3, Tracy 0

Back from its second-place finish in the High Sierra Tournament in Reno, Ripon (10-1) continued its impressive start to the season with a 25-18, 25-19, 25-21 sweep at Tracy (6-3).

Adrianna Dorn produced 10 kills, four aces and four digs. Jorie Eskes added eight kills and two blocks. Shayla McKeon connected for seven kills. Setter Katelyn Bogetti finished with 21 assists.

The Indians’ JV prevailed, 25-15, 25-21.
