The Trans-Valley League girls soccer championship once again goes through Ripon.
Led by Olivia Maragos’ second-half hat trick, the Indians wrapped up the first round of their league games on Thursday with a 3-0 win over chief challenger Hilmar at Stouffer Field.
The visiting Yellowjackets (4-1-1 TVL, 10-4-3 overall) had given up just one goal against league opponents, and Maragos scored three inside of a 20-minute span.
She got the five-time defending champion Indians (6-0, 11-3-1) on the board with a header in the 50th minute, connecting with it off the bounce after Clara Schoolland’s free kick from near the midfield line. Maragos struck again in the 67th and 69th minutes. Ripon had a chance to net a fourth goal but had a penalty kick get blocked. Danielle Rey contributed an assist.
Goalkeeper Ellena Parenti recorded two saves. The Indians notched their third consecutive shutout behind the efforts of defenders Malia Locarnini, Addison Naranjo, Starla Skiles and Schoolland.
BOYS SOCCER
Sierra 3, Mountain House 2
The Timberwolves (4-2, 11-3 overall) picked up an important Valley Oak League win at Daniel Teicheira Memorial Stadium, getting goals from Ayden Akca, Neddy Ramos and Alejandro Sanchez. Christopher Stackpole contributed an assist.
Manteca 2, Central Catholic 1
In Modesto, Prospect Afanyu scored one goal and assisted the other to Julian Oregel, as the Buffaloes (1-4-1 VOL, 2-14-2 overall) capped a productive week that started with a 1-1 tie with rival East Union.
Leo Garcia had two saves.
Lathrop 2, Beyer 1
The Spartans (4-2-1, 7-5-3 overall) were tested in the Western Athletic Conference game in Modesto.
They overcame a slow start, and Juan Morales scored both of their goals in the first half. Andres Garcia and Omar Rodriguez got the assists.
Goalie Julian Ceja racked up four saves.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Lathrop 38, Livingston 33
The host Spartans (2-3 WAC, 9-10 overall) trailed 13-6 after the first quarter but clamped down defensively to come back for the win. They held Livingston (3-2, 7-9) to two points in the second quarter for a 16-15 lead and limited the Wolves to seven in the final period.
JV boys soccer
Manteca 11, Central Catholic 0
Vincent Martinez and Mikey Rodriguez each had a hat trick, and Luis Lucas scored twice.
Alberto Gutierrez, Huber Guzman and Edwin Ramirez added one apiece.
Frosh girls basketball
Livingston 38, Lathrop 23
Laniyah Stroud-Prince netted 10 points for the Spartans, who fell to 4-1 in WAC play.
