ROUNDUP: Pale places 3rd in VOL golf final for section-qualifying EU

East Union’s girls golf team and four Manteca players have qualified for the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III Tournament.

They earned their spots Tuesday in the Valley Oak League Championships held at Micke Grove Golf Links in Lodi.

Led, by Ariana Pale’s 6-over-par 78, East Union placed third with a score of 499. Pale finished third individually behind medalist Ashlee Xu of Mountain House, who carded an even 72, and Oakdale’s Bella Cortes (77).

Oakdale (432) repeats as league champion, getting five individuals in the top eight. Mountain House took second with a 494. Manteca turned in a 555, while Central Catholic, Patterson and

Joining Pale in the top 10 is fellow Lancer Jessica Ingalls’ who was 10th with a 96. Also scoring for East Union were Kendall Perry (100), Ava Gutierrez (111) and Alizae Farias (114).

Four of Manteca’s scorers are moving on along with an alternate. Emily Camara (101), Clare Cook (108), Aleisa Harris (110) and Layla Flannigan (116) are among the VOL’s six individual qualifiers for the section tourney. Rebecca Navarro (120) is the alternate.

The SJS Division III Tournament is on Oct. 28 at Pheasant Run Golf Club in Chowchilla.


Livingston 251, Lathrop 321

Briana Sobrevilla paced the host Wolves in the Western Athletic Conference dual match with an 8-over 44 at Rancho Del Rey Golf Club in Atwater

Ashley Abon led Lathrop with a 60. Following her were Madison Dash (62), Yadira Hernandez (64), Kate Albisu (66) and Kriselle Matela (69).


GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

East Union 3, Patterson 0

The Lancers (4-6 VOL, 5-10 overall) picked up a needed win to keep their postseason hopes alive.

Katelynn Trevino led them with 12 kills, seven digs and eight service points. Meritiana Luani added 14 assists, four kills, four digs and two aces. Giselle Velazquez collected 14 digs and 11 points.

Isabella Rodriguez served 16 points, six for aces. Marcella Carranza had nine points, three aces and six assists.


Mountain House 3, Manteca 2

Manteca (5-4, 12-11) was edged out 24-25, 25-18, 25-23, 23-25, 13-15 for its third straight VOL defeat.

Senior libero Nicole Ayala led the Buffaloes with 23 digs, seven assists and five aces. Setter Riley Ward posted 30 assists and 14 digs. Outside hitters Ariceli McBroom (15 kills, 10 digs) and Saniyah Anthony (12 kills, 14 digs) also had double-doubles.

Amil Gaskins (four kills, seven blocks), Talia Shellbourne (six kills, four blocks) and Trinity Todd (four kills, five blocks) were also key contributors at the net. Kamiyah Johnson contributed 10 digs, and Bella Medina served four aces.


FLAG FOOTBALL

Sierra 14, Patterson 6

The Timberwolves (8-1, 15-5) escaped Patterson with the win to remain a game up in the VOL standings.

Taylor Zalunardo led them with 11 tackles on defense and 59 yards from scrimmage on five touches.

Quarterbacks Tessa Zalunardo (10-of-13, 102 yards) and Maitland Kohoutek (3-of-10, 24 yards) each completed a touchdown pass.

Janessa Barnes and Kohoutek each had an interception, and Margeil Garcia chipped in a sack.


East Union 20, Manteca 0

Caliyah Lopez was an all-around contributor for East Union (9-2 VOL, 15-4 overall) with six receptions for 70 yards, six rushes for 21 yards, one touchdown and an interception on defense.

Alexa Bretao added four tackles, two interceptions and a pass break-up to the shutout. Gwen Baker also had four tackles, a pass break-up and a pick.

Quarterback Julianna Gaspar completed 18 passes for 159 yards and rushed five times for 55 yards. Larissa Harries and Ava Barrera each scored a touchdown.

Manteca fell to 6-3 in the VOL, 10-11 overall.


GIRLS TENNIS

Sierra 7, Central Catholic 2

The host Timberwolves were spotted three points from singles defaults, but they still won the majority of matches played.

Elina Nguyen shut out Kate Maniwan in the No. 3 singles match. The top doubles team of Xitali Gonzalez and Evelin Garcia also won, 6-0, 6-0. Sadie Herrera and Nadine Yamomo took the No. 2 doubles match, 6-3, 6-0. The third tandem of Melissa Castillo and Amara Kenechukwu prevailed, 6-0, 6-1.

Central Catholic’s Mianna Robinson defeated Mikayla Villalobos 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Landyn Wetzel downed Sasha Martin, 6-2, 6-1.


Frosh girls volleyball

East Union 2, Patterson 0

Kadence Rossi doled out five kills and five aces to help the Lancers come away with a 25-11, 25-14 road sweep.

Camille Christensen also had five kills. Maria Kallandytkl added two kills and four aces.
