ROUNDUP: Oscar Angel, Christian Gonzalez earn Frogtown XC invite titles

Two state cross country meet qualifiers from the area were among the top individual runners this past weekend in the Bret Harte Frogtown Invitational.

Manteca senior Oscar Angel won the 3-mile, varsity large-schools boys race in 16 minutes, 32.30 seconds, while junior Christian Gonzalez led Sierra to a third-place team finish in the varsity boys small-schools division with his win in 16:17.47

The Timberwolves scored 103 points and were followed by seventh-place Lathrop (240) and eighth-place Ripon Christian (256). Oakdale dominated with 33 points.

Joining Gonzalez in the boys small-schools division top-10 was teammate Ernesto Pacheco Jr., who took sixth in 17:18.58. Anthony Bueno was 30th in 18:31.02.

Other notable harriers from the area include Lathrop’s Riley Gier (17:50.52) and Ripon’s Isaiah Green (17:50.56), who placed 13th and 14th, respectively.

Jordyn Hegarty represented Manteca in the varsity girls large-school race and ended up 18th in 23:47.59.

Sierra’s girls came in fourth place (133) in the girls small-schools division, Ripon took ninth (226), Lathrop 10th (240) and Ripon Christian 14th (315).

Monse Saavedra paced Sierra in 13th place in 21:26.08, while fellow Timberwolf finished 29th in 22:58.61. Jacqueline Pena Santillan (26th, 22:28.75) led Lathrop, and Mallory Govia (30th, 23:00.39) spearheaded Ripon.

Highlighting the lower-level races with first-place finishes were Manteca’s Paisley Coenenberg (14:26.88) in the 2-mile, girls frosh-soph large-schools division and Ripon’s Violet Wagner (23:49.98) in the 3-mile girls JV small-schools division.

Ripon 13, Davis 10

In a non-league clash between Sac-Joaquin Section finalists, the reigning Division II champion Indians (6-3) traveled to Davis last Friday and edged out the Division I runner-up Blue Devils (4-5).

Ripon was able to hold on for the win despite exclusions to two key players in the third quarter.

Brody Biedermann tallied four goals, four steals and two blocks to lead the Indians. McKeane Beier and Ryan Bell added three goals apiece.

Ben Svoboda chipped in two goals and three assists. Teo West had three assists to go with his one goal. Matthew Lee contributed four assists and two steals. Goalie Andrew Hanker came up with 10 blocks.
