Sophomore Kailee Jackson played a part in all of Manteca’s goals in a 3-0 girls soccer win over visiting Patterson on Wednesday.
It was much-needed result for the Buffaloes (1-2, 5-6-3 overall) after they dropped their first two Valley Oak League matches. Patterson (3-5-2) fell to 0-3 in league.
“Overall, really good game for us,” Manteca coach Justin Coeneneberg said. “I was pretty impressed by Patterson; they came out and played really hard. They have some strong central midfielders, but I was proud of the way our girls responded, and I’m really happy with how they played the second 40 (minutes).”
Manteca led by a goal at halftime. Outside back Layla Flannigan set up Jackson’s first goal with a through ball.
In the second half, Jackson put away a penalty kick that was awarded after Makayla Spencer was fouled in the box. The Buffs locked down the win in the final minutes. Mackenzie Forsberg was on the receiving end of a set-piece delivery from Jackson.
Manteca has a three-game week ahead starting with a road game Monday at Mountain House.
Oakdale 2, Sierra 0
The visiting Timberwolves (2-1-0 VOL, 11-3-2 overall) came up empty-handed on the attacking side despite 16 shot attempts.
Avery Alves came up with six saves for Oakdale (2-0-0, 7-8-0). Kyra Binstock and Lauren Ghigilia accounted for the goals. Sierra goalie Amaya Pacheco recorded three saves.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Ripon Christian 60, Hilmar 32
Three-time reigning Trans-Valley League champion Ripon Christian (1-0, 11-4) began its title defense at home, and it was nip-and-tuck to start. The Knights were ahead 14-12 early in the second quarter but broke away with a 12-0 run.
They assured the win with a 25-5 barrage in the second half. Amos Cady made three 3s and scored 11 of his 15 points in the third quarter. He also had seven rebounds and four assists.
Jake Vander Veen led scoring with 20 points to go with five boards and four assists. Mason Tameling drained three 3s and scored 11 points. Chase Bunnell collected five points, seven rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocks. Walker Postma netted four points, 10 rebounds and three blocks.
The visiting Yellowjackets (0-1, 4-11) were headed by Cohen Felber’s eight points.
Ripon 60, Hughson 46
An 18-9 third-quarter surge powered host Ripon (1-0, 8-8 overall) to the TVL-opening win.
Ethan Bauer keyed run with two 3-pointers. He finished with 10 points. Logan Lefebvre and Marcus Madoski each had 18 points to lead the way. Andrew Shaw added eight.
Jackson Gehrke paced Hughson (0-1, 9-8) with 19 points.
Lathrop 57, Grace Davis 27
Lathrop (2-0, 6-9 overall) escaped Modesto with the Western Athletic Conference victory after a back-and-forth battle.
Joseph Perkins anchored the Spartans with 29 points and five steals. Justin Neal chipped in 11 points and five rebounds. Bryan Gamboa had 10 points. Grace Davis slipped to 1-1 in conference play.
Lathrop also won the lower-level games, with the JV prevailing 52-38 and the freshmen, 45-27.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Hilmar 31, Ripon Christian 22
A 15-point explosion was the difference for host Hilmar (1-0 TVL, 3-9 overall) on Tuesday. The Yellowjackets were led by Emma Gomes’ 15 points. Reagan Van Der Hoek had 13 points for Ripon Christian.
JV girls soccer
Sierra 5, Oakdale 2
Kaylee Rodriguez’s hat trick highlighted the road win for Sierra. Mikayla Mercier and Ivy Sutton added one goal apiece.
Roxy Le distributed two assists. Analia Carillo, Abigail Fraser and Mercier had one each. Goalie Abigail Garcia racked up four saves.
JV boys basketball
Sierra 59, Oakdale 50
Visiting Sierra’s Isaac Kempff and Karanbir Bhandal netted 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Jordan Harrison contributed 10 points and eight rebounds Alves chimed in with nine points, making three 3s.
Frosh boys basketball
Oakdale 53, Sierra 46
Oakdale won the game at the free-throw line in the fourth quarter when it made 11 of 16 free throws. The visiting Timberwolves (1-1 VOL, 8-8 overall) were limited to two attempts.
Jack Taylor kept them in it with three 3-pointers and 15 points. Kiral Tran tallied 13 points.
