ROUNDUP: Manteca’s Oscar Angel takes 1st in SJS Sub-Section Division II

 Manteca senior Oscar Angel clocked the second-fastest overall time in the Sac-Joaquin Section Sub-Section Meet this past Saturday at the Calaveras County Fairgrounds in Angels Camp.

He was the top placer in Division II boys, finishing in 15 minutes, 54.7 seconds. Only Broen Holman of Sonora, who competed in Division IV, had a better time at 15:19.6.

The top 10 teams and 10 individuals in all varsity races qualify for the SJS Championships this Saturday at Willow Hill Reservoir Community Park in Folsom.

Sierra’s Christian Gonzalez was the next best individual performer from the area. He took fourth with a time of 16:11.9 in Division III boys, leading the Timberwolves’ eighth-place team finish. Ernesto Pacheco (17th, 17:04.7), Rishabh Gopal (48th, 17:53.4), Max Perez (55th, 18:07.0) and Manuel Alvarez, (69th, 18:41.8).

The Sierra girls placed seventh in Division III and were paced by Anna Dittman (11th, 21:12.1), Serena Dittman (36th, 22:00.6), Haley Hill (44th, 22:31.5), Ashlyn Springer (48th, 22:47.4) and Abigail Fraser (55th, 22:58.3).

Lathrop will have two varsity representatives at the section final in Riley Gier (46th boys, 17:41.4) Jacquelyn Pena Santillan (40th girls, 22:15.9).

Both of Ripon’s teams are bound for SJS finale in Division IV.

The boys took sixth behind Isaiah Green (17th, 17:21.1), Moses Gomez (32nd, 18:12.6), Milan Chun (35th, 18:13.0), Miguel Acosta-Pearson (40th, 18:18.5) and Jonathan Salinas (80th, 19:24.0).

Ripon’s girls finished 10th, getting contributions from Mallory Govia (37th, 22:17.9), Malia Locarnini (47th, 22:55.4), Kember Duncan (49th, 23:04.9), Izabella Rodriguez (67th, 23:49.9) and Katya Vega (75th, 24:24.9).

In Division V, Ripon Christian’s boys move on after taking seventh. Matijs Zylstra (31st, 19:45.1), Joel Hendricks (36th, 19:53.1), Ethan Vander Plaats (37th, 19:54.4), Colton Veldstra (48th, 20:15.2), Jackson Anema (78th, 21:29.4) scored for the Knights.

Ripon Christian’s girls came in sixth. Leading the Knights were Addison De Jong (31st, 24:08.5), Tessa Schoolland (36th, 24:41.0), Kate Thompson (39th, 25:10.8), Leona Cheney (64th, 28:25.3) and Ava Amirhamzeh (66th, 28:37.4).

River Islands took eighth in Division V girls with scoring from Sarah Le (50th, 26.55.9), Srika Saddapalli (53rd, 27:09.5), Octavia Orndoff (54th, 27.16.7), Yasaswini Pattangi (61st, 28:06.4 and Helen Le (62nd, 28:12.1).

In the lower levels, six teams and 10 individuals qualify for the SJS Championships.

Manteca’s Paisley Coenenberg was among the standouts, as she took fourth in Division II frosh-soph girls in 14:00.4.

River Islands won Division V freshman boys with Moses Calixto (14:20.2), John Engaling (14:40.5) and Darshan Shyamsundar (14:43.5) finishing 4-5-6 in that order.

Other lower-level teams advancing: Sierra JV boys, Sierra sophomore boys, Lathrop sophomore girls, Ripon sophomore boy and Ripon freshman boys.

Sierra’s Iris Rodriguez (JV girls) and Lathrop’s Adrian Vaye (sophomore boys) are individual qualifiers.



BOYS WATER POLO

Ripon 17, Woodcreek 5

The second-seeded Indians (25-5) took care of business in their SJS Division II quarterfinal last Friday at St. Mary’s in Stockton.

Ben Svoboda led the reigning champs, converting five of six goal attempts while securing four steals. Brody Biedermann added four goals on six shots, and Matt Lee had three goals and six steals.

Goalie Andrew Hanker recorded six blocks and four steals. Boen West chipped in a pair of goals, while McKeane Beier, Nate Selna and Teo West had one apiece.

Ripon will host No. 3 Merced (25-5) on Wednesday back at St. Mary’s. The Bears handled No. 6 Del Oro, 15-6.


Buhach Colony 22, Sierra 8

No. 8 Sierra (16-15) had its best season end against the top-seeded Thunder (16-9) in Division III. Buhach Colony faces No. 4 Christian Brothers (16-12) in the semifinals.


GIRLS TENNIS

SJS Individual Tournament

The Manteca tandem of Emma Ngo and Shreya Raman were defeated in the semifinal round of the Division II doubles tournament last Friday at Johnson Ranch Racquet Club in Roseville.

They lost to top-seeded Ariana Kim and Emily Wong of Rodriguez (Fairfield), 4-6, 3-6. Kim and Wong went on to repeat as section champions after defeating Mountain House’s Anya Palsson and Vivian Zhang in the title round, 6-3, 7-5.
