Manteca’s Ethan Freitas placed third in the Valley Oak League-opening tournament on Wednesday, carding a 4-over-par 76.
He helped the Buffaloes finish with the best team score among Manteca Unified schools, as they edged out rival East Union for fourth place, 476-477. Sierra took sixth out of seven with a 485.
With its five scorers placing among the top seven, Oakdale won comfortably with a 374. Central Catholic (426) and Mountain House (462) followed the leader, and Patterson rounded out the field with a 584.
Nolan Harris turned in a 3-under 69 and held off Oakdale teammate Estuardo Duque (71) to earn low-medalist honors. Fellow Mustang Owen Hauselmann tied Freitas with a 76. Freitas is the lone local golfer in the top 10.
Gael Juarez (94), Logan Pool (99), Cooper Chamberlain (103) and Sebastian Cabrales (104) also scored for Manteca.
Michael Pires paced East Union with an 86. Tiago Chadinha (89), Xavier Guerrero (97), Chase Kalin (102) and Drew Kalin (103) were the Lancers’ other contributors.
Sierra was led by Jorrden Llamas Mojarro’s 90. He was joined by Carson Murray (92), Jace Neto (96), Jakob O’Neil (99) and Jake Morrow (108).
The second of five VOL tournaments is next Thursday, April 3 at Oakdale Golf & Country Club.
BASEBALL
Manteca 11, Mountain House 1 (5)
Nate Slikker hit a triple, drove in three runs and scored three more, while fellow sophomore Jimmy Burns made his first pitching appearance for the host Buffaloes (6-2 VOL, 13-3 overall) and got the win.
Manteca had just six hits but walked twice, were hit by seven pitches and aided by four errors from Mountain House (0-6, 4-11-1).
Eddie Anthony and Jace Quitasol contributed two RBIs apiece. Burns struck out three and allowed one unearned run on three hits and two walks in his four-inning start. Nicholas Yee, also making his Manteca debut, pitched a perfect fifth inning, striking out one.
Patterson 7, East Union 5
At Agostini Field, the Lancers (1-4 VOL, 7-8 overall) rallied for five unanswered runs in the final three innings but came up short.
Jackson Fay spearheaded the comeback charge, going 2-for-3 with two steals, a run and two RBIs. Joe Alvarez and Blake Mount each batted in a run.
Eight different batters had at least one hit for Patterson (4-2, 8-4), including a pair of doubles from Guy Allard. Freshman Cole Medina was the winning pitcher, striking out six in five innings.
Oakdale 6, Sierra 0
The offensive woes continued for Sierra (2-5 VOL, 4-8 overall), which was shut out for the sixth time in its last seven games. Rudy Barney and Cameron Diego came up with the Timberwolves’ lone hits on Wednesday.
A.J. Chapman pitched 2 2/3 shutout innings in relief. Oakdale (6-2, 9-6) will look to complete the sweep at home Friday.
Ripon 2, Sonora 1
All runs were scored in the seventh inning, with Landon Crawford and Joseph Molthen coming through with RBI knocks for Ripon (1-1, 5-6 overall) in the Trans Valley League tilt.
Freshman reliever Frank Carter Castro was the winning pitcher. Sophomore Fabian Nuno pitched the first 5 2/3 innings, striking out 12 in the combined two-hitter.
Grady Jasmer was the hard-luck loser for visiting Sonora (2-2, 2-10).
Escalon 8, Ripon Christian 7
The visiting Knights (0-4 TVL, 6-8 overall) rallied to tie the game with three runs in the seventh inning, only for Escalon (3-1, 9-6) to walk it off in the bottom half.
Noah DeBruyn went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs to lead Ripon Christian.
BOYS VOLLEYBALL
Lathrop 3, Ceres 0
The host Spartans (4-2, 13-5 overall) won their fifth straight match, taking care of Ceres (2-3, 5-6) 25-18, 25-18, 25-19 in Western Athletic Conference play.
Gabriel Fa’ali’i led Lathrop with 15 kills, seven digs and two aces. Cameron Loyola netted 10 kills and a solo block. Meauta Miller and Marc Llorin pitched in nine and six kills, respectively.
Mario Luna racked up 39 assists and three digs. Elias Medel finished with eight digs.
JV boys volleyball
Lathrop 2, Ceres 0
Bryan Gamboa pounded out 11 kills, and Jayden White contributed seven in Lathrop’s 25-23, 25-12 sweep.
David McNair chipped in seven aces to the attack. Cayden Phaing had 21 assists and an ace. Christopher Ygay collected five digs.
