ROUNDUP: Manteca staves off Mountain House for big VOL volleyball win

In a battle between Valley Oak League contenders, Manteca’s reigning champion boys volleyball team stunned Mountain House on the road Monday, 19-25, 25-16, 25-22, 13-25, 15-11.

The Mustangs (4-1 VOL, 10-5 overall) came into the week ranked 13th in the Sac-Joaquin Section by MaxPreps.

Setter Mark Bondoc (37 assists, 14 digs) and Jesus Gomez (18 kills, 11 digs) led the Buffaloes (3-0, 10-4) with double-double efforts. Middle Rob Hevener nearly had one of his own with 14 kills, eight block and two aces.

Daylen Cheng (two blocks) and Logan Romriell (seven digs) support the attack with five kills each.

Mountain House won the JV match in five sets.

Manteca has another big match ahead as rival East Union visits on Wednesday.


East Union 3, Patterson 0

At Dalben Center, East Union (3-1 VOL, 8-3 overall) cruised to a 25-15, 25-15, 25-20 sweep.

Isaac Serrato led the Lancers with 10 assists, 10 service points and three aces. Xavier Gaspar fired six kills and five aces. Gabriel Torres added nine kills and three blocks.

BASEBALL

Venture Academy 5, River Islands 4

The Riptide (0-1, 6-3 overall) opened Central California Athletic Alliance play with a heartbreaker at Billy Hebert Field, where host Venture Academy walked it off in the 10th inning on a bases-loaded hit by pitch.

River Islands had a chance to seal the win after jumping ahead 4-3 in the top of the seventh inning. George Dayeh and Israel Fuentes each drove in a run for the Riptide, while Matthew Echivarre scored twice and stole three bases.

Maison Gouker struck out 10 over six innings in a no-decision for Venture (1-0, 9-1). David Mays went 3 for 4 with a double and two runs.


Manteca 16, Mountain House 2 (5)

The Buffaloes (5-2, 12-3 overall) bashed 14 hits on their way to a Valley Oak League rout.

Chris Chavez (RBI), Jace Quitasol (double, RBI), Nate Slikker (two RBIs) and Caleb Ortega (triple, RBI) contributed two hits and two runs apiece. Noah Navarro and Preston Smith both drove in two runs and plated two of their own.

Carter Hetrick (three innings, strikeout) and Tristian Murphy (two innings) combined for the four-hitter. Lennox Morgan plated both runs for Mountain House (0-5, 4-10-1).

Schutte also had two RBIs.


Patterson 11, East Union 6

In Patterson, the Lancers (1-3 VOL, 7-7 overall) scored the first two runs in the third inning, but the Tigers (3-2, 7-4) jumped ahead for good with a four spot in the bottom half. East Union rallied late to close in 7-6 in the sixth, but Patterson again responded with a four-run burst.

East Union was able to score six runs, five unearned, against Oregon-committed ace pitcher Max Medina. Randy Martinez went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs. Jackson Fay hit a triple and scored twice.


Oakdale 5, Sierra 0

Visiting Sierra (2-4 VOL, 4-7 overall) could not get untracked against Georgia commit Landon Schutte, who struck out 10 in a no-hitter for the Mustangs (5-2, 8-6). Ryan Reyes drew a walk to spoil his bid for perfection.


BOYS GOLF

Crosstown Cup

Ripon came in second place at Turlock Golf & Country Club, finishing 12-under par as a team. Host Turlock won the 3-man scramble with a 14-under.

Ripon Christian took fourth at 11-under, and Ripon’s JV finished four-over for seventh place out of 24 teams.

East Union 2, Patterson 1

East Union (4-1 VOL, 6-4 overall) came from behind for the 18-25, 26-24, 15-10 victory.

Urijah Lopez paced the defense with 10 digs. Gael Rubio racked up five kills and two digs. Alex Madrigal (ace) and Oliver Desjardins split setting duties and handed out six and five assists, respectively.
