ROUNDUP: Manteca fends off Oakdale for road win

Manteca’s boys basketball team picked up an important 58-52 road win Saturday at Oakdale.

The Buffaloes (1-1, 7-10 overall) came into the game after dropping their Valley Oak League opener to Mountain House, and their next two games are against cross-town rivals.

Tyler Watkins led them with 17 points, scoring 11 in the second half after he was limited by early foul trouble.

“Oakdale’s always a tough place to play,” Manteca coach Geoff Israel said. “I felt we came out energized at the start but slow and sloppy in the third.”

Austin Barnes added 12 points and two blocks. Johan Peringelil had nine points and seven rebounds. Josh Mellion and Jeremiah Orona each contributed eight points. Mellion also had five rebounds, while Orona drained two 3s in the first half.

“Josh was a difference maker for us just taking up space and getting to the rim, Israel said.”

Manteca hosts Sierra on Friday.


Ripon Christian 77, Modesto 46

Mason Tameling knocked down five of his seven 3-pointers in the second half, scoring a career-high 24 points in the non-league tilt Saturday at home.

The Knights (10-4) had a 44-22 lead in the third quarter before Modesto (2-13) mounted a 10-2 run to stay in the game. Ripon Christian countered with 11 unanswered points and continued the assault in the fourth quarter when it led by as much as 31 at 70-39.

The Knights totaled 10 made 3s and 17 assists. Jake Vander Veen netted 24 points, four rebounds and four assists. Chase Bunnell registered 13 points, six rebounds and five assists. Amos Cady pitched in seven points, seven rebounds and four assists.


GIRLS BASKETBALL

Manteca 41, Oakdale 38

The Buffaloes (1-1, 6-10) bolted out to a 17-8 first-quarter lead and held on for the VOL road win Saturday.

Oakdale (0-2, 7-10) was held to single-digit scoring in each of the first three quarters but made things interesting with a 16-point outburst in the fourth.

Kalaja Reese and Michailla Springs each scored 10 points, and Lana Bondoc chimed in with nine. They combined for six of Manteca’s seven 3-pointers. Jaesha Dunn affected the game with her energy, as she collected 12 rebounds, four steals and two blocks.


JV girls basketball

East Union 29, Mountain House 28

Avianna Menzel scored 11 points to lead the Lancers, who escaped Mountain House with the VOL win on Saturday. Kymoni Beasley chipped in six.


Frosh girls basketball

East Union 34, Mountain House 20

Camille Christensen anchored East Union’s road victory with 16 points, 11 rebounds and four steals. The Lancers held their opponent to just five points in the second half to run away with it.

Elle Balyut added 11 points and six steals. Jisselle Tuggles accounted for seven points and three steals.
