ROUNDUP: Manteca edges East Union in VOL golf opener

 Ethan Freitas and Cooper Chamberlain led Manteca’s boys golf team to a 260-272 Valley Oak League win over East Union at Manteca Park Golf Course on Wednesday.

Freitas finished as co-medalist with East Union’s Michael Pires, as they each finished 11-over 47. Chamberlain was the only other player to end with a sub-50 score at 49.

Logan Poole (51), Logan Yagi (53) and Jack Corson (60) rounded out scoring for the Buffaloes. Tiago Chadinha (50), Drew Kalin (58), Chase Porter (56) and Chase Kalin (61) were scorers for EU.


BASEBALL

Manteca 7, Tracy 3

Sophomores Jeremy Cross and Nate Slikker combined to pitch five scoreless innings for Manteca (5-1), which used a five-run burst in the sixth inning to race away with the road win.

Noah Navarro powered the attack with one hit, two runs scored and two driven in. Cameron Jimenez added two hits, including a double.

Cross pitched three innings in relief for the win, striking out five while giving up just two hits. Slikker had two strikeouts and gave up one hit and no walks in his two-inning start. Carter Hetrick and Navarro each pitched an inning.

Dylan Giannini fired five strikeouts and gave up two runs (one earned) on three hits in four innings for Tracy (2-3). Freshman Brady Brown went 3 for 3 with a double.


Ripon 9, Beyer 2

In Modesto, the Indians (2-3) built a 7-0 lead in three innings and coasted behind the combined pitching efforts of Fabian Nuno (4 1/3 innings, five strikeouts, two unearned runs), Josh Husband (1 2/3 innings, two strikeouts) and Logan Spear (inning, strikeout). They held Beyer (2-2) to just three hits.

Brayden McDowell (run, four RBIs), Hunter Weber (three RBIs) and Isaiah Martinez (steal, two runs, RBI) all went 2 for 3. Joseph Molthen and Fabian Nuno each hammered a double.


Stagg 11, Lathrop 0 (6)

The host Delta Kings (5-2) rallied for seven runs in the sixth inning to enforce the mercy rule.

Jordan Blase, Tommy Hammond and Josue Nerio had the three hits for Lathrop (1-4). Stagg amassed 15 hits.


SOFTBALL

Manteca 16, Tokay 3 (4)

The Buffaloes (3-1) broke it open with nine runs in the second inning at Arnaiz Softball Complex.

Lauren Moncada highlighted the attack, going 2 for 2 with two doubles, two walks, two steals four runs and two RBIs. Alesia Harris (run, RBI) and Ayva Wilkins (double, run, two RBIs) both went 2 for 3. Marissa San Nicolas and Sienna Lowery plated three runs apiece.

Riley Ward pitched all four innings, ringing 10 strikeouts while holding Tokay (2-2) to three hits.


BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Manteca 3, Weston Ranch 0

Jesus Gomez powered the visiting Buffaloes (2-0) to a 25-19, 25-23, 25-20 win with 15 kills.

Rob Hevener and Logan Romriell chipped in six kills apiece.


JV boys volleyball

Weston Ranch 2, Manteca 0

Manteca came up short, 21-25, 23-25.

Ryan Mu and Nikko Juarez anchored the defense with 13 digs and four blocks, respectively. Eli Navarro paced the attack with seven assists.
