ROUNDUP: Lathrop’s Santillan places third in WAC XC finale

Jacqueline Pena Santillan paced Lathrop’s varsity girls cross country team to a second-place finish in the Western Athletic Conference Championships on Wednesday at River Bluff Regional Park in Ceres.

Santillan placed third individually in 21 minutes, 38.3 seconds. Freshman teammate Morgan Emery came in eighth (22:48.8), and sophomore Mackenzie Collins (23:00.7) rounded out the top 10. The Spartans scored 59 points, trailing only Pacheco’s 38.

Lathrop’s varsity boys took fifth with 129 points out of eight teams. Beyer (26) cruised to the title. Riley Gier led the Spartans in ninth place in 17:33.2.

Lathrop 32, Beyer 7

Luz De Luna amassed 298 passing yards and five touchdowns in Lathrop’s final tune-up for the postseason, which begins next week.

The touchdowns were distributed to four different receivers. Kiana Quintero accounted for two of the TDs, compiling 80 yards and seven catches. Heiddy Camacho (two receptions, 25 yards), Sareah Reed (4-80) and Aaloyah Thompson (3-64) reeled in the other scores.

Faith Butler registered 13 tackles and a pass deflection for the host Spartans (12-2 WAC, 18-3 overall). Makayla Hegler had two sacks.


JV volleyball

East Union 2, Sierra 1

The Lancers (11-1) finished as the top team in the Valley Oak League with the win on Tuesday.

Taylor Rios paced them with nine kills and two digs. Emily Pires (eight digs) and Kennedy McLeod (two blocks) chipped in four kills apiece.

Elle Baluyut collected 12 digs and two kills. Chantell Ochoa had five digs.

Lathrop 27, Beyer 0

The Spartans (12-1-1 WAC, 14-3-1 overall) capped their season with a shutout. Sharan Gil, Miranda Sosa and Brianalea Rodriguez each grabbed an interception to highlight the defense.

Camila Salcedo directed the attack, finishing with 120 passing yards and three touchdowns. She connected with Mariana Coon, Citali Lopez and Cassidy Rudd for the scores. Melia Lewis added a rushing touchdown.
