Sierra sweeps Oakdale in VOL girls volleyball opener

Lathrop’s boys and girls water polo teams were defeated by Beyer in Western Athletic Conference play Thursday.

Christian Buerster accounted for both of the Spartans boys’ goals in an 11-2 loss. The girls fell short, 20-7.

Hannah Stewart led Lathrop’s girls with three goals, and Sophia Moreno netted a pair. Kalani Soriano and Elizabeth Rodriguez each scored one.

 

CROSS COUNTRY

WAC meet No. 1

Lathrop’s varsity boys and girls teams both placed third in the WAC-opening meet Wednesday at River Bluff Regional Park in Ceres.

Taimane Lowery was the Spartans’ top all-around performer, finishing fourth in 23 minutes, 2.4 seconds in the varsity girls race. Stephanie Andrade Salcedo placed ninth in 24:42.7. Paulina Villarreal (18th, 27:21.6), Deisy Carrasco (19th, 27:25.0) and Eliza Alday (21st, 27:54.3) rounded out the team’s third-place score of 60. Mountain House won both races as a team.

For the boys, Michael Salcedo led the way with a ninth-place run in 18:17.3. Aron Camacho (13th, 18:39.5), Nathan Puck (18:55.3), Luis Matute (22nd, 19:26.0) and Miguel Gonzales (30th, 20:15.9) followed suit.

Lathrop’s frosh-soph girls also took third and were paced by Sarah Vivero (third, 15:56.1) and Dayanna Martinez (sixth, 16:25.3) on the two-mile course. The frosh-soph boys finished fourth behind Amani Vaye (13th, 13:17.1). Adonis Siga was the JV boys runner-up in 12:36.8. Simerpret Gill led the JV girls with a sixth-place finish in 20:46.1.

 

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Sierra 3, Oakdale 0

The Timberwolves (1-0, 10-1 overall) kicked off Valley Oak League action with a 25-20, 25-22, 26-24 sweep at Oakdale.

Rebecca Thomson accumulated 36 assists, six aces, five kills and 11 digs. Jenna Dalen anchored the defense with 23 digs. Zoe Kossart blasted 19 kills and four aces. Alexandra Chapman contributed six kills and six blocks.

 

Manteca 3, Kimball 1

Courtney Washburn netted 14 kills, eight blocks and two aces to help defending co-champion Manteca (1-0 VOL, 8-4 overall) stave off the visiting Jaguars from Tracy, 25-18, 25-12, 24-26, 25-20.

Michaela Singh contributed with 10 kills and two blocks. Setter Ava Negranza distributed 18 assists, while Jessica Almeida dished out 16 to go with 15 service points.

Jill Santos added 10 digs and two kills. Nicole Ayala chimed in with eight digs and 16 service points.

 

Central Catholic 3, East Union 0

The Lancers (0-1 VOL, 8-5 overall) could not keep up with the reigning VOL co-champion Raiders from Modesto in the 23-25, 19-25, 17-25 loss at Dalben Center.

Mariela Navarro produced four kills and three blocks for East Union, Jatziry Garcia rapped six kills. Makayla Viri and Marcella Carranza handed out six and five assists, respectively. Bela Israel led the defense with nine digs.

 

Ripon Christian 3, Denair 0

The Knights (4-0, 13-4 overall) had a quick visit to Denair, coasting to a 25-7, 25-11, 25-6 Southern Athletic League win.

Jordan Vander Veen finished with 11 kills and three digs, while Lean Van Wyngarden fired 11 aces to go with three digs. Megan Weststeyn contributed 33 assists and three digs.

 

Lathrop 3, Johansen 0

The Spartans (4-1 WAC, 6-4 overall) swept 25-14, 25-18, 25-21 behind Alaba Olaleye’s four kills, eight aces and 16 digs.

Celeste Narvaez contributed 18 digs. Camila De La Garza and Alejandra Vazquez pitched in 13 and nine assists, respectively. Janessa Ward had five kills, while Elizabeth Andrade chipped in four to go with three aces and three digs.

 

Junior varsity

Sierra 2, Oakdale 0

Gurjaap Kaur collected four assists and three aces in the 25, 22, 25-23 win for Sierra (1-0 VOL, 5-2 overall).

Ellie Denny chipped in 12 digs and an ace. Megan Azevedo had four kills.

 

Manteca 2, Kimball 0

The Buffaloes rolled to a 25-12, 25-21 sweep behind Peyton McDonald’s eight kills and two aces.

Jayana Dias set 15 assists, Rylee Newcrest slapped down four kills and Rylan Steckler had two blocks.

 

Central Catholic 2, East Union 0

East Union was defeated, 15-25, 13-25.

Jillian Ramirez and Izabella Avalos (ace) picked up five digs apiece. Gisele Velazquez clubbed three kills, and Laura Montanez distributed five assists.

 

Lathrop 2, Johansen 0

The Spartans won 25-11, 25-17.

Justine Mabutas led the defense with 10 digs, while Genesis Contreras contributed five digs and five aces. Julia Roaquin handed out nine assists and added two solo blocks. Valerie Renteria netted four kills and four digs. Briana Elayba served six aces.

 

Freshman

Oakdale 2, Sierra 0

Sierra (0-1 VOL, 2-4 overall) came up short on the road, 14-25, 24-26.

Danica Cesante registered three assists, two aces and two digs. Ashley De Belen added two kills and an ace.

 

Manteca 2, Kimball 0

Manteca cruised to a 25-20, 25-13 victory.

Talia Shelbourne served six aces to go with two kills. Jocelyn Baptist tagged six kills, Sienna Lowery had nine assists and two aces, and Riley Ward collected four kills and two aces.

 

Central Catholic 2, East Union 0

The Lancers were dealt a 16-25, 12-25 defeat.

Bailey Ford tallied three kills and three service points. Gwendolin Baker served five points, one of which went for an ace.

 

Lathrop 2, Johansen 0

Kriselle Matela fired seven aces, while Kira Davis added six in Lathrop’s 25, 20, 25-12 sweep.

Shakara Porter contributed four aces and three kills.
