ROUNDUP: Knights win showdown with Hilmar in clash of division champions

In a showdown between defending Sac-Joaquin Section Division VI champion Ripon Christian and Division V champion Hilmar in the Knights’ annual girls soccer tournament Saturday morning, Ripon Christian won 3-1 in the second game of the tournament.

Alanna Blanco scored two goals for Knights (5-2-1) on a rebound and an assist from Naomi Hendricks. Lauren Mouw assisted Hendricks for an insurance goal. Both teams were scoreless in the second half.

Argonaut beat Ripon Christian 3-0 in the tournament finale, and since the format was round-robin the Mustangs won first place over Grace Davis due to goal differential. The Spartans finished second and the Yellowjackets third The Knights take to the road Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. to face the Hilmar (7-3-1) in the Trans-Valley League opener for both teams.


Vern Gebhardt Cup

Sierra (9-2-2) finished tied with Franklin in group play with the Yellowjackets (6-1-1) advancing to the championship due to goal advantage where they lost 6-0 to Enochs (6-2).

The Timberwolves played St. Mary’s (4-1) for third place and lost 1-0.

Sierra hosts Manteca to open Valley Oak League play on Wednesday night at 6:15.


Junior varsity Lincoln 4, Sierra 0

After battling through a scoreless first half the Trojans (7-1) scored four goals in the second half for the championship.

The Timberwolves (11-1-1) started Saturday with a 1-0 win over St. Mary’s to earn a berth in the finals.

East Union 7, Summerville 0 Makenna Miller posted her third shutout of the tournament to help the Lancers (8-3) secure third place.

East Union’s Sierra Dormer notched a hat trick and an assist with Cheyanne Hudson (assist), Adriana Martinez (assist), Aaliyah Betancourt and Cambrie Souza adding a goal apiece and Leah Venegas two assists.


Lincoln 1, East Union 0

Miller notched five saves.

Manteca scored three times each with two outs on Friday while getting gutsy pitching efforts from Cameron Jimenez and Jimmy Burns in a 3-1 win over visiting Oakdale that has the Buffaloes leading the pack in a heated race for the Valley Oak League title.
