After giving up the first nine points, third-seeded Ripon Christian scored the next 19 and coasted to 58-38 victory over No. 14 Sutter in the first round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV boys basketball playoffs on Wednesday.
The Knights (23-5) host No. 6 Colfax (21-8) in the quarterfinals Friday with a berth to the NorCal tournament on the line. Colfax downed Escalon 57-45 in its opener.
Ripon Christian overcame its sluggish start with defense, holding the Huskies (16-13) to just two points in the second quarter for a 24-11 halftime lead. The gap widened early in the second half, as the Knights charged out of the break with eight unanswered points.
Mason Tameling anchored that third-quarter surge, scoring 12 of his team’s 21 points. The junior guard finished with a game-high 18 points, which include four 3-pointers.
Jake Vander Veen contributed 14 points, five rebounds and three assists. E.J. Bruno had 10 points and seven rebounds. Amos Cady chimed in with six points, five boards and five assists.
Nathan Palmer paced Sutter with 12 points, six coming in the first period.
Division III
Twelve Bridges 57, East Union 37
The 13th-seeded Lancers (15-13) could not get untracked offensively in Lincoln.
Zydell King led them with seven points, while Lorenzo Jones and Jackson Pellizzari each had six.
Fourth-seeded Twelve Bridges (22-7) takes on a Foothill Valley League rival in the quarterfinals, as No. 12 River Valley (11-15) upset Valley Oak League co-champion Central Catholic, 58-55.
BOYS SOCCER
Ponderosa 3, East Union 1 (OT)
In Shingle Springs, seventh-seeded Ponderosa (9-6-1) avoided the minor upset by scoring a goal in each of the two overtime periods. Each team scored once in the second half.
Efren Ruiz assisted David Gonzalez for the 10th-seeded Lancers (13-6-7), while the host Bruins had three different goal scorers.
Up next for Ponderosa is No. 2 Valley.
Valley 4, Sierra 0
No. 15 Sierra (13-8) was no match for the defending champion Vikings (24-0-5), who received goal contributions from seven different players at Cosumnes River College.
Juan Campos led them with one goal and one assist.
All four VOL teams were eliminated in the opening round, including top-seeded Patterson in a stunning 2-1 loss to No. 17 Pioneer. Mountain House was routed by Division I top seed, Franklin, 6-0.
