OAKDALE — The Manteca High girls volleyball team continued its recent success against Valley Oak League foe Oakdale on Thursday, surging to a 20-25, 25-13, 25-20, 15-25, 15-3 victory that completes a season sweep of the Mustangs.
“I can’t remember the last time a Manteca team swept them,” Manteca coach Kevin Bolding said. “Winning one out of the two used to be a great accomplishment, so this was huge. It’s another step to where we need to be."
The reigning VOL champion Buffaloes (6-1, 14-3 overall) have beaten Oakdale (4-3, 5-6) in three out of their last four meetings. Last year, they defeated the Mustangs for the first time since 1999.
The see-saw affair turned into a rout in the end, as Olga Perez (15 digs, 19 points, two aces) served eight straight points to give Manteca an 11-3 lead in the deciding set. Bolding attributed the dominant finish to defense. Payton Reis (14 kills, 12 digs) and Kacy Bolding (11 kills, 20 assists, 13 digs) each had a block during the run, while the back row handled the rest.
“I wish I can say we killed the heck out of the ball, but we just hit the right spots,” coach Bolding said. “The difference was we had a lot of digs. All of the sudden we just decided not to let the ball drop.”
Freshman libero Abbey Kadillak helped anchor the defense with 32 digs. She also had 10 service points and two aces. Kaitlyn Morenzone added 15 digs to go with 13 kills and 22 assists. Julia Moreno contributed 10 kills to the attack. Kaylee MacDannald finished with five kills, four digs, two blocks and 13 points.
“In the end it was just the whole energy and momentum swinging that put us over the edge,” Bolding said. “I don’t want to take anything away from Oakdale, they played way better tonight than the first time we played them. We knew going in that we would have to definitely step our game up playing them on the road.”
