Manteca’s boys basketball team notched the first varsity win for new coach Geoff Israel on Tuesday, downing former Valley Oak League foe Kimball 63-55 in Tracy.
The Buffaloes (1-1) used a 21-point burst in the second quarter to take a 36-27 halftime lead and held on from there.
“I’m proud of the way the boys battled tonight,” Israel said. “We will get back to practice and work on some things and get ready for a tough Lodi team on Saturday.”
Tyler Watkins and Johan Peringelil led Manteca with 18 and 17 points, respectively. Harp Mehrok contributed 12 points and 14 rebounds.
Golden Valley 63, Ripon 43
In Merced, Ripon (0-1) could not keep up after it was tied 23-23 at halftime
The Indians had no answer for Jeff Tangaan, who buried six 3-pointers and made 10 of 12 free throws for the bulk of his 32 points.
Marcus Madoski paced Ripon with 25 points.
Enochs 63, Lathrop 45
Joseph Perkins amassed 21 points and eight rebounds, but it wasn’t enough for the Spartans (0-1) in their season opener Monday.
Caiden Wisnieski pitched in eight points and nine boards.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
East Union 55, Gregori 43
The Lancers (2-1) overcame foul trouble in Modesto, scoring 20 points in the third quarter to jump ahead.
With three starters each called for three fouls in the first half, East Union began the third period with a new lineup and it paid dividends.
Jayda Anderson and Alexa Zuniga led the way with 14 and 12 points, respectively, making two 3s apiece.
Shebra Rezaye chimed in with 11 points and nine rebounds. Zyondupree Beasley had 10 points.
Alannah Lopez scored 10 points for Gregori (2-2).
Tokay 33, Ripon 26
The Indians (0-1) led 17-11 at halftime but could not get untracked offensively.
Thalia Chavez of visiting Tokay (2-2) led all scorers with 10 points. Scarlett Ponce and Kaylee Lehmkuhl had six points each for Ripon.
JV boys basketball
Manteca 63, Kimball 55
Mohammed Awan anchored the visiting Buffaloes with 11 points and seven rebounds.
Estevan Vargas and Shahab Safi turned in 10 points apiece.
Frosh girls basketball
Gregori 32, East Union 24
The visiting Lancers could not overcome a 10-1 first-quarter deficit despite a 14-point barrage from Camille Christenseu.
