Second-half defense helped Manteca’s boys basketball team ward off visiting Oakdale in a 50-39 boys basketball win Wednesday.

After trailing 21-20 at halftime, the Buffaloes (5-3 VOL, 11-13 overall) raced away with a 16-7 fourth quarter.

Austin Barnes led them with 18 points, and coach Geoff Israel credits Landon Butler for providing a spark.

“Boys came out a little lethargic tonight,” Israel said. “A couple of guys have been sick and got winded. Landon Butler came off the bench and gave us great energy, especially in the second half defensively. His rebounds and steals all came in the second half. After halftime, the boys came out and played way better defensively.”

Butler contributed with four points, six rebounds and five steals. Tyler Watkins netted 10 points and three assists. Johan Perengilil had eight points and five rebounds.

Manteca has the rest of the week off from game action and next plays at Sierra on Wednesday, Feb. 5.
